Title: Re: BW/Q, Algonquin, and Temagami Post by solotripper on Sep 5th, 2009 at 5:38pm
My 1st Solo trip was in Algonquin park. I figured IF I didn't like it, that was an easier place to bail out of. I went in thru the south part of park.
First thing that struck me was how crowded it was, on lakes routes that would be a "overnighter" from EP. Being used too the Q, I busted butt the first day and got up into the "interior". Not so crowded, but I saw people 6 night out of 7. The portages are well maintained, some are long, I took a 1 mile one, but it had the canoe "rests" every 1/4 mile, and that made it real easy compared too a Q/BW portage. They have/had a full time portage/campsite cleaning crew. The campsites close to EP are often littered by the people who come in for a day paddle or just an overnighter. ALL the portages/campsites are marked by huge neon red signs, that you can see from the water. I used my compact binoculars too check for availability before wasting time paddling over. You have too give the reservation office an itinerary, lake and day you want too stay on. Sites are first come first serve, so take that into consideration. BEARS, are a major problem up there. They warn you about them and you'd do well too pay attention. With so many visitors, the bears KNOW people mean food. I was nervous double portaging leaving food pack alone, so sometimes I tossed a rope and hung it just in case. I would hang for sure, or if a ground hider, make sure you check for bear sign before you stash your food. 2nd trip, I went with Brother-in-law, and went in thru the northern part of park. I would recommend that, way less people, but everything else was the same. |
