Todays POD is one of the clearest Picto's I've ever seen.
Where is it at? I'm wondering "if" the Native person(s) who painted this and many others, wasn't under the influence of some Magic Mushrooms ;D The Moose(?) seems obvious, but is that a Wolf/ Native Peoples dog, chasing it? AND that guy after them both looks like Sasquatch, or maybe PJ after a couple double fingers from the Jug ;) |

I think the monks at Gethsemani had today's creek photo in mind when they described serenity.
If I could escape there with a book and a cup of coffee, (switching to, say, Woodford Reserve about noon), all would be right with my world. Peaceful photo. Thank you for sharing. -- kypaddler |

Mike P -
Again, I ask: Quetico or WCP?!? I took a nearly identical pic this year (not as well photographed, of course!) but I never made it to Quetico. There is a spot on the NE corner of Aegean Lake that looks suspiciously similar to the spot in your pic.... Wherever the heck it is, I'm just like old MK631... wishing I was there! And, mentally, I am. I thank you & all POD providers for fueling my escapist moments. Keep those pics rolling in to db, folks; I believe his tank is still close to empty... and we have LOTS of daydreaming miles to go! Jimbo 8-) |

I used to use mid-calf no-lace rubber boots that kept you nice and dry -- until the water got above them or one got pulled off. In this case I tried to hop on one foot with an aluminum canoe on my back & re-insert my foot without getting it wet. I don't recall being very successful at that & but I think it looked entertaining to the guys I was with. Anyway, what time of year was this? It's on my route for August 2010 & I'm interested if I can expect as much slop as many years ago. Thanks -Tom |

Title: Re: POD (cont. 13) Post by db on Dec 23rd, 2009 at 7:19am
What is that anyway a Redhorse or something? At first glance I was afraid it was a carp but I know that ain't it.
BTW - No one bothered to mention that bottle of salad dressing yesterday. Huh. I'm truly amazed. Were you all thinking how nice salad looked on a canoe or simply not notice? Christmas spirit perhaps? Poof. Any POD 'series' of images, taking that term as far as you'd like, is ~Courtesy: all of you and then some so that's where thanks should always be directed. [smiley=dankk2.gif] And so ends the 09 pod series. I do what I can with re-sequencing what people offer so it's always nice to have (You need to Login or Register. I'm low on snow and ice images at the moment. -------- Tomorrow will be begin the annual, heavily photoshopped, java induced, traditional PC Christmas card people always seem to complain about so some of you may not want to look at the POD again until next year. Here is the text in that case: Best wishes for this holiday season and the new year as well. May both be filled with treasured moments shared by family and friends. ~ Meanwhile... Ever lengthening days mean more time to hug the kids, love the wife ... and eventually paddle. May you all keep that Merry Christmas, Happy Festivus, ... state of mind as long as possible and count your blessings with as many fingers as you want but don't forget your toes. --- The first POD of 2010 is very nice and well worth the wait. Good timing too! |

Title: Re: POD (cont. 13) Post by kypaddler on Dec 23rd, 2009 at 2:13pm
Truth be told, db, I was too engrossed trying to figure out what the heck the green and orange stuff was on those plates.
I should have recognized it as salad (it seems so obvious now) but in the context of a canoe, I was confused. I mean, I would assume that picture wasn't taken in somebody's backyard but in the north country, thus shouldn't that be hardtack and bannock and maybe fish leavings? If I pulled a head of lettuce, some carrots and a cucumber out of my Duluth pack, I'd be roundly mocked. heh heh. Merry (almost) Christmas, y'all. -- kypaddler |

Title: Re: POD (cont. 13) Post by Spartan2 on Dec 23rd, 2009 at 8:25pm
OK, I'll bite. WHAT bottle of salad dressing? All I see is some plates of salad on a canoe--and that gave me a double-take as it was! ::)
Merry Christmas to all of you, too! |
|
Title: Re: POD (cont. 13) Post by db on Dec 23rd, 2009 at 10:38pm
See attached.
I looked at it as I processed it for the POD and looked at it again when I set the order, one more time to make sure there was a picture displaying around midnight. I saw it yet again when I loaded the 1/1/10 image and two screens later it hit finally me. Hey, wait a minute, let's back up a minute.... My excuse is the salad was unusual enough and then I probably thought cool, red dressing, alright! (It does look good doesn't it?) I'm just surprised a couple hundred people saw it and no one even asked about the bottle. It's a bottle of food IMO. You can legally bring in stuff like OFF in an aerosol spray can but not PAM - at least the way I interpret the rules. My brain just assumed salad dressing wasn't food I guess. When I realized it even could possibly be considered a bottle of food I made it go away. I know the BW allows beer in plastic bottles but you can't burn your empties. Peanut butter is obviously food but those 'jars' ::) would be considered acceptable -IMO- perhaps reusable? Salad dressing also comes in packets though so I'd prefer a POD wasn't somehow 'suggesting' bottles for that purpose. Maple syrup? I don't know, I always splurge and get the real stuff and repackage into more conveniently shaped bottles for group trips. I asked and brought in a glass bottle of Buckley's once with blessings from the staff - because that's not considered food I guess. Don't take my word for anything though. I could easily be wrong and or over complicating things - and I'm certainly not judging the photographer. It's just my well reasoned and insightful, personal opinion while thinking of my own safest, easiest, best path options. ;) Way to go Spartan2. Now my brain hurts. ;D Anyone know for sure how certain things fall under the rules? P6020038_1_2.jpg ( 8 KB | 0

well, I'll go with redhorse...I catch a few whitefish every winter while crappie fishing, and I've been known to net a few "whitefish" or "tulibees"....smoke em, pickle em or fry em {whitefish} ..good eats ;D.....on the other hand, I figgured "plastic" salad dressing bottle, as I do enjoy a fresh salad for as many nights as I can untill "skunk cabbage" forms ,... but I figgured no one would use anything other than an alum. canoe for a picnic table, which also makes a good surface for setting the camp stove upon :o...Prouboy: hats off to you for knowing what a canoe is really for ;)

I think Whitefish or Tulibee. Doesn't Redhorse have a wider, sucker-like head? And maybe smoother sucker-like skin ?
RE: Bottle of Dressing, if it is glass it would be a bad idea. But I also take a big bottle of dressing for a group trip. I have never considered I had to re-package salad dressing which was in plastic already. In a group you would use a whole bottle eventually and would be way less garbage than using packets of dressing. Packets or those little plastic tubs with foil cover work good for one or two paddlers. |

Its a little hard for me to judge the distance in my memory but I would guess about 100FT. Most of the time he would not even look my way. He wanted the breeze to keep the bugs off his face. The canoe kept drifting so my back was facing him. That was at the narrows on Burnside Lake on my solo trip this past summer. Todays POD, the camp sight with the hammock is my camp sight on Sturgeon Lake.

That site looks familiar. Is that the kinda high one on the north shore near Scripture? You could put a huge tent photo left. |

Well, I was WRONG, again. And to all those guys who said Whitefish, you were right, as always. Here's what Steve Hirsch, from the MN DNR, wrote when I sent him pics of the fish in question (from the POD 12/23) Definitely a lake whitefish, Coregonus clupeaformis. They are a coldwater fish, often in deep water. They have a small mouth and therefore usually target small prey, so they are not commonly caught by anglers. Very good eating. prouboy |

That camp sight is on the North shore West of Scripture Island. Its where the North shore almost touched the long skinny island that runs East and West. |

I think I like the loon shot even more than the eagle shot. The baldy is beautiful, but nothing conjures the feeling of being 'up north' like the loonies! 8-) -tom |

Great loon shot, Ken. I'm wondering what part of the summer or fall you took it in. I notice a little whitening around the chin of the loon and am thinking that is the beginning of fall molt into nonbreeding plumage, which I saw a fair amount of this September. But maybe I'm wrong and it's just normal breeding plumage. Do you remember when you took the pic?

There were actually. I think I could have done a week of good eagle shots but I decided to break them up. I didn't plan on using this loon shot though, hard to tell what's going on but after HoHo's post I looked for an EXIF date using this one. I think I see a tail going down too and what looks like water droplets flying about so that became a good reason to display it today. They are at the size that was sent so I have no extra details to consider. FWIW - I do have a few left in the queue but (You need to Login or Register |

HoHo, et.al.,
Loon shots were taken the 1st week in July, 2009. We were heading from North Bay to Burke Lake on our way out, and these shots were taken just before the portage leading out of North Bay. Early in the morning; pair of loons. My daughter-in-law just zoomed in on this guy and probably took 30 pics with her digital, and caught this guy preening and stretching. Several of the frames turned out really nice. I like the eagle pics because they are such majestic birds, but these loon pics are my favorites. Loons are synonymous with the northwoods, at least for me. And when they open up and preen like this, they're absolutely stunning. Glad you're enjoying. Regards, Ken |

1/23 sure was a nice eagle shot. How do you get that kind of clarity on a moving target zoomed from distance? I take pictures, but clearly I'm not a photographer!
Thanks again for that series. -tom |

Mk,
I have to confess, these are not truly my shots. I was only the facilitator for my daughter-in-law. Our trip last July was through the S-chain. First trip for my son & his wife. Primary goal was relaxation and photography rather than fishing. On this particular day on North Bay, near the exit/entrance to the S-chain, I paddled slowly while she sat in the bow. We stalked this eagle, very slowly, for hours. Really. She used a 270mm zoom lens that she had to hold very steady. When it finally lifted and flew, she clicked off about a dozen shots at a time. A lot of them were out of focus to some degree, but some were pretty good. You've seen some of the better ones. Same with the loon pics, etc. The beauty of digital photography is not having to worry about film developing and expense. In 7 days she took over 1100 shots, of which only about 300 were good and about 50 were, in my opinion, stunning. It changed me; I'll never go to Quetico again without a good camera, and I'll always take time to use it. I can re-live that trip so much better than with just a journal. I'd like to find time to produce a trip report like the ones HoHo does. They are spectacular because of his skillful combination of prose and photography. So, now you know. Glad you've enjoyed. WiF |

Thanks - that's actually good to know. At my level of interest, I won't be getting shots like that and that's OK. But even at my level, it takes a lot of time away from fishing -- but I do enjoy the pictures! -Tom |

Enjoying the Knife Lake series, as I haven't paddled that area in 10 years. Didn't know there had been a burn, and don't think Cavity or Ham reached there. Anybody know the details of when and where?

I was talking with the FS Station Crew and I understand that the Forest Service did a controlled burn in that area to block the potential fires over the blowdown area. starwatcher |

Looks like today (Feb 1) is Ottertrack Lake day on Quiet Journey. Is the picture from the campsite on the north shore near the western end of the lake? It looked nice from the water.

Yes, Ho Ho; the campsite is on the south shore on the west end of the lake (The north shore is rugged and in Canada). That last chance to get a site on that end of the lake. It was a good site because you could access it from two sides, from a protected bay on the east side. Ottertrack has limited campsites with only one campsite on the east end. I wonder why the FS didn't also create a campsite at the old miner's camp on the east end that looks like a nice site.

WiF,
The REI tent is my friends and one comment that I don't like about it is that its four 20 foot poles have to be inserted through a nylon mesh; which is insane, very difficult, and typically takes two people to set it up. A newer version of the tent you just have to clip the tent to the poles, which is incredibly easier. I hope you have the new version. starwatcher |

Were your photos scanned from film? The color-balance is reminiscent of film- very nice. |
