Mickey and caught one of those also, on cherry this summer past fishin' for Lakers. I surmise that we hooked into him in near to 50' deep. Is it really a redhorse or is a whitefish?

I'm pretty sure it's a redhorse

Well, I was WRONG, again.  And to all those guys who said Whitefish, you were right, as always.  Here's what Steve Hirsch, from the MN DNR, wrote when I sent him pics of the fish in question (from the POD 12/23)

Definitely a lake whitefish, Coregonus clupeaformis.  They are a coldwater fish, often in deep water.  They have a small mouth and therefore usually target small prey, so they are not commonly caught by anglers.  Very good eating.
