Don't ASK, tell her your going! Assuming your a good husband/provider and not depriving your loved ones by spending money on a trip that will make father and son memories for a lifetime, then you have every right to a GUILTLESS trip!
 The first step to growing a pair is taking charge of the relationship dynamic. If you don't want too do it for yourself, then think of your son ;D  Being P-Whipped is no way for a man to go thru life ;)

Just remember to duck and weave while asserting your new found assertiveness. Who knows, she may find herself surprisingly delighted by your newly found " kahunas "   8-)
