Title: Canoe registration for out of staters. Post by thebrokedown on Jan 28th, 2010 at 11:16pm
Hey, guys. I searched for this, I swear, but found no threads. I bit the bullet and bought a terrific canoe last summer, and I am planning on carting it on up to the BW from Mississippi this summer in July. Mississippi requires no registration on canoes, but if you choose to register one, the cost is prohibitive. I have gleaned that we can register our baby in Minnesota for a realistic fee, but I am having a problem figuring out how to do so. Can anyone lend me a hand, here? Thanks so much.
Oh, we are going in on a Tuesday, and can be in Ely before 3 that Monday. Willing, though not thrilled by, the prospect of doing the registration sometime Monday in Minneapolis/St Paul or, better, in Duluth. This is if we can't handle this by phone or online, of course. |

Try this: (You need to Login or Register
As far as I know, the only way to do it is in person, there isn't an online option. You just show up, fill out the form, pay the fee, and they hand you a registration sticker to place on your boat. If you're driving to Minnesota for your trip, you'll have no trouble finding a registration station. Check out the link above for more information and locations. |

Thank you for a much better source of info than I had found by Googling. Now the question is, where is that receipt? I hope the folks that sold it to us can provide another if we can't find ours. We weren't looking ahead, were we?

tbd,
Try (You need to Login or Register I think you can only renew online. Call St Paul per the number listed. They may be able to have you send in the required proof of purchase etc so they can do it by mail as you are out of state. Otherwise you will have to do it in person the first time around when you come up from MS. 3 years down the road when it expires, then you can do it online WR |

One more ?
(LOVE the nick, Wenonah Rider!) My husband insists that they will not give us the stickers for the boat, just the number sequence, and we have to go buy stickers somewhere. He says this because all of the boat owners he knows here in MS have had to do so. I'm reading you guys as saying that we will get the actual registration number stickers when we register, correct? Mississippi thinks of canoes as "funny little boats that sure could use a motor." |

Minnesota-registered boats that aren't motor-propelled (like canoes and kayaks) get a 4" square registration sticker - but don't have to display a number.

This Southern gal thanks y'all. Looking forward to my first Boundary Waters trip with my own canoe--no more outfitters for me! [smiley=dankk2.gif]

Just out of curiosity... what sort of canoe did you settle on?

I can save you a LOT of hastle. You can store it at my place (in MN). I'll put a sticker on it. You can pick it up & drop it off anytime...

Actually you don't need to do anything in person to register your canoe in MN. I have done this with several canoes and have never been to a license branch. You need to go to the website listed above and print out the form for canoe registration (I think it may actually be for more than only canoes). If I remember right, there are 2 fees you need to include. To be safe I would call the license office to know for sure what the cost is. Then mail the form and payment in and they will send you the sitcker. And, as mentioned above, you just need to display the sticker with the expiration year on it. I have found that the license office is very helpful and responsive.
