Title: Solitude Post by wally on Feb 21st, 2010 at 5:37am
Solitude by Bob Kull
Ever wonder what it would be like to go solo for a year? Bob did it and wrote a book about it. 100 miles out into the Chilean archipelago of Patagonia. 1st quarterof book is pretty much straight forward journaling in trip report style. Good writing and I followed him along on maps. Middle half of book gets deeper as he delves into self-examination of life and who he is. whole book is in a daily journal-entry type style and an easy read. If you've ever thought how a year alone might impact you...give it a read. An interesting sidebar...his whole project was linked to him talking a Canadian university into approving this expidition for a doctoral thesis in a study of himself and how Solitude affected him....here's a link to his web page....under the "Solitude Project" link, you can find some maps and pics under the "slideshow". (You need to Login or Register Me, I'm sick of myself after 6 days alone. |

Great find Wally,
The link to the slide show gives a feel to it. The pics are awesome. Who knows, I might have to pick this one up. [smiley=thumbup.gif] |

Just finished this on my Kindle. Overall I am lukewarm on the book. The daily details of living were interesting, but I found his philosophizing and whining about not finding himself tiresome. He seems to be one messed up guy; mistreats his Cat, unsure of his sexuality, his disinterest in 9/11, etc.
Interesting but not a consistently entertaining read. |

Gee, Wally...I dunno....launching your cat across the cabin because it's making noise seems a bit extreme. To each their own, I guess. Just not the way I treat pets. |
