Title: Busiest portage
Post by grizzlylarso on Mar 31st, 2010 at 1:24pm
I'm wondering if I can get some suggestins here. What do you guys think is about the busiest portage in the BW? I'm probably thinking Ely end. Only particulars are that it needs to be no more than a couple hours paddle from an entry point. Most busy portages I'm sure will be. And there needs to be some actual portage to it, not just a lift over or 30 rod thing. Doesn't have to be super long but should be an actual portage.
Thanks

I'm sure the FS could give you some actual data on this. My guess would be the portages (2) between Lakes One and Two.

OS
That's my guess also. Just checking to see if someone had some ideas I hadn't thought about.

Lake One to Two is a good thought.  With Moose Lake's twenty-something entry permits a day, I would guess that Newfound to Splash, Prairie Portage, and Birch to Carp would all be major contenders.  Seemed like these were always clogged up after about 9am.

I think the portage going east from Moose Lake going toward Ima Lake (I don't remember the first lake off Moose) is also very, very busy.

The Sawbill-Alton portage is crazy too, but doesn't fit your criteria.

I agree prouboy, those are busy portages.  What about the 80 rod Newtown Falls portage out of Fall Lake during the opening of fishing season?

Never been on that one.  Sound like something I should avoid.
