Hi Kristen,
I think you will find a 17ft canoe inadequate for your needs. Are you driving up to your intended lake? If so you might have to take turns. If I may speak bluntly I think you may put your family into a dangerous situation by putting 5 people into a 17ft boat. That size craft is far more suited for 2.
