Title: Cedar strip advice
Post by grizzlylarso on May 12th, 2010 at 1:53pm
I've been half heartidly looking for a solo canoe for a little while but being I haven't had the right money at the right time most canoe's I've found haven't worked out. I found a cedar strip last night at a great price $400 and am thinking about getting it when I'm down in the twin cities this weekend. I haven't delt much with cedar strips so I don't know exactly what to be looking/ asking for when trying to figure out if $400 is a great deal or hiding a great problem. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

yeah - just buy it before someone else grabs that boat.  $400 is nothing for a canoe.  Buy it, try it, and either keep it, or resell it for $600 and keep looking for something else.

I wonder if it was a typo, and the guy is asking $1,400 ?  that is more in line with what most people are asking for strip built boats

I thought hte same thing on the price. I double checked and he again said $400. Hadn't thought of buying it and then maybe selling it again if I wanted something else.

You can't the materials for that kind of money :o WRC is crazy expensive....then the epoxy & glass...sure it aint hot? With a slider to boot. What are the measurements on the boat?
What is the hull design?

The price is a steal - I can't buy the materials for that even with a reasonable deal on wood.  Check to make sure there isn't any fiberglass delamination and find out what the builder used for varnish so you'll use the right stuff when it comes time to revarnish.

I decided to go take a look, probably get, the canoe last last weekend. I told the guy I'd be there about noon on Saturday and would likely buy it unless there was something major wrong with it. I went down to Minneapolis with my wife Friday night (3 hours away) with plans on going the last couple of hours Saturday morning. Late Friday night I got an email that he sold it to someone else even though I was on my way. Kinda frustrating.

Paddle it first.  At that price there might be something very wrong with it.  Around here a canoe like that goes for $1000 easy.
