For years I have used a Reliance plastic collapsible water jug, but it gives the water it holds a strong plastic taste.  Anyone know of an alternative that doesn't make the water taste like plastic?

I've been using a waterproof dry bag from Cabela's for several years now (think "reverse" use of a dry bag).  It only takes an instant to fill out in the lake (although getting it back over the gunwales is a bit like landing a whale), I dispense water via the air-bleed valve and I either drape it over a log, rock or hang from a tree as a "dispensing station."  It also dumps easy when clearing camp and rolls up into a relatively small space that I can stuff.  After the trip, I can turn it inside-out for cleaning.

Only downside so far ... you have to be a little conscious about poking a hole in it.  I've not had that problem, but I know my paddling partner's "sprung a leak" on one trip.  He has also used his as a shower on a trip or two.

Here's a little tip I picked up off of some PBS show about cleaning and using "green" type household items.

Fill your Jug with clean water and add a couple of tablespoons of baking soda. Shake well, and let sit for a few days. Rotate on its side occasionally so all the plastic gets touched.

I use this on all water carriers that are plastic, jugs/Camelback type containers etc. etc. Also before using the jug as after they've been stored dry for awhile. Will take the plastic taste right away, and you don't have to worry about chemicals.  

A cup of vinegar in water, following the same directions will disinfect and clean the jug before you "sweeten it" ;)

   I fought with claening disinfecting and drying collapsable water containers my self. However I have found a reasonable solution that works well for me. I use a solution of 2 tablespoons of household bleach per liter of water to clean and disinfect my water containers and filters after a trip including water bottles. I have never noticed a plastic taste, but then again my wife would tell you I have no taste buds anyway. The baking soda would work well after you hae the container disinfected and dry.

 I really like Denton Docs water container idea. Easy to clean and dry after usage for sure. These guys are the camping masters.

Quick filling, large capacity, easy to clean, will not spill too much in the bottom of the canoe, hang easily, and double as a solar shower.  Since they pack small, we put them in an easily accessible area and get our water away from shore before arriving in camp.  2 bags are usually enough for a crew of 6 for an overnight stay, unless they are used for showers.

I have used one of these for years.. no taste .. filter screws directly to the mouth..
