Nice shot, Ben.  Your son using yak paddle?

Is this in the deep water section (by deep I mean the area just east of the portage to Streak where my depth finder was pinging 300 ft)?

Yep, that's Brandon out there fishing.

Nope... That shot was taken off the little island obviously shooting west. The island was up in that little group of islands north east where you guys showed me a spot. Not sure I camped where you guys did last year or not.

It can be done with a support structure underneath that's removed upon completion.

In a recent discussion (elsewhere) about Inukshuks that are built thousands of miles from where they belong I spoke up as a kicker instead of a builder.  This sort of rock building is not what I would kick, this is awesome!  Also a fun way to kill an afternoon.

Great collections of photos!  Looking forward to what comes next.

BTW:  Thanks for letting me hang at your place on my way north this summer.  You are a most gracious host!  Loved meeting the fam.  Hopefully we'll have another opportunity to share a Q campsite again before too long.

I'm wondering if this is the campsite Denton Doc stayed at. If so, was there the name carving in the trees and peeled bark off the otherwise beautiful birch trees when you were there? Otherwise an awesome campsite.

Title: Re: Picture of the day - POD (cont. 16)
Post by Jimbo on Aug 17th, 2010 at 1:56pm
If DD stayed where I think he did, then the grove of birch COULD be that campsite.  What seems unfamiliar to me, however, is the "furniture".  That would be a new development since 2009.  We cleaned that site up a good bit last year but added no log seating.

I stayed on the "peninsula" site this year (as well as last).  This picture looks VERY familiar.  However, like you said, some of the "furniture" looks new, even from my June trip.

Ben -

Eureka Timberline tent with vestibule?  I've got a 4-man version of that plus the front-end "cooking fly" as well.  But its a bit too heavy for my solo travels these days.

Post by nctry_Ben on Aug 17th, 2010 at 8:55pm
Yep, that's a two man timberline w/ vestibule. My son got the 4 man version but like you, to much weight for me. I've used them for the thirty plus years I've been paddling.

And yep, this is on the peninsula across from the island campsite. It was a large area with several good tent site possibilities if I didn't take up have the space for my rain fly. The site was an easy paddle to some great fishing.

Jimbo... I was going through your pics from last year and #10 is not Paull Lake as it's labeled but from this campsite on Mex Hat. I have the exact picture three times... Once in the day, once a sunset and one morning shot.  ;D I can't remember if I submitted it.

Did you walk out to the point at the Aegean campsite?  What did you think of the glacial erratics?

You recognized a great spot. The "glacial erratics" were neat. Not a bad paddle to the cave from here.

Thank you.  I just got a new camera this year and some kick-butt lenses.  I think once I learn to use it all, I will be able to finally almost make the shots I see in my mind's eye, but I am not nearly there yet.

Oh really nice photos lately.

I'm packing for a mid-September trip, and I'm looking at the Aug. 25 web shot, the Aug. 28 fire shot, and the Sept. 1 "sun paddle" shot (as well as others), how I wish I had a modicum of the lens talent these shooters have.

Dang, man.

Today's thing.

I've seen a number of these at similar locations and have always wondered how they inserted them and how long is that eyebolt or whatever it's called?  Sometimes the stuff humans did/do simply amazes me. I'm hoping this is one that someone can easily educate me on. Brownie points will be awarded if you can explain how they were used and/or why there is no rust to be seen?

Pick up the Fall BWJ page 49 and let your kids read it, see if they can figure out the real purpose of the Ring Rock.
I could have done without 90% of that one.
Good question on the rust, when was stainless steel discovered?

Title: Re: Picture of the day - POD (cont. 16)
Post by starwatcher on Sep 29th, 2010 at 2:15pm
Stainless steel was invented 1911 to 1913 according to the web.  Just a guess on the rust question.  If it's submerged all the time or dry all the time there's less chance for a chemical reaction and it won't rust.  I suspect it's a good quality steel and my guess it that the metal dries very quickly after a rain and doesn't have much of a chance to rust.

db,

As pajeff says, just check out the story & the pic in this BWJ issue.   Same danged ring at the Conk campsite, I'm guessing.

As written in the story, they were once used to tether the fabled and (allegedly) extinct Jackfish... which, of course, were puny suckers compared to pollyhumpers and some other fish I've heard tell about on QJ.  PJ catches & releases equivalent-sized fish regularly.

Anyway YOUR pic IS the BWJ pic minus the people & plus some flotsam & jetsam in the water.

Post by PhantomJug on Sep 30th, 2010 at 12:11am
I'm going to go out on a limb and say that these rings were used more for the fur trade than logging.  It was something that trappers used to anchor their traps.  I have no proof of this - it's just a guess to possibly win the brownie points.  I need them.

Ummmm, budget constraints necessitated letting my BWJ subscription lapse with the Summer issue. (Anyone interested in a nearly complete set of back issues?)

I'm thinking it had something to do with moving barges or clumps of logs maybe??? I didn't look for wear patterns beyond the flat top that's not mushroomed at all. Anyone feel like offering a short description for that POD?

Trapping still goes on up there but.... Yesterday's photo is indeed from Conk's outflow looking beyond the takeout. Fifty points are awarded to O_S!  (He could have had some help though.)

Today's is from -- anyone?

Seeing logging stuff up there always humbles me. I just shake my head and can't even imagine what that life might have been like.

As far as yesterday's pic:

My electrochemistry is a little rusty (pun intended), but I have a few tentative ideas.
1) Depending on the rock, it could create a high pH environment. The oxidation of iron requires H+ ions. High pH = low H+ ion concentration and therefore it's a good rust inhibitor.
2) Again, depending on the rock, there may be another mineral with a more positive reduction potential acting as a sacrificial electrode - much like the one in a water heater.

Help.

So, I have never actually been to Conk. But I have seen pics from those who have. Our original trip plan remains on my bucket list. ;)

From today's photo of falls from the outflow of Telescope Lake (WCPP) ... I traveled the lake from Stuart Lake (west end) to Hjlarmar Lakes (east end) but don't remember these falls.  Are these falls on one of the north/south lakes?

I do remember falls of this caliber between Edgar and Optic... but I could have overlooked a lot through that section since it was pouring rain when I went through.

Nice pic, BTW!

Ditto.

This year the road surface was quite a bit better than last year.  Seems like they had just graded it not long before my trip.  Despite that, there were still a few washboard spots left and a few spots where water was running over the road (mostly due to beaver activity).  Just a few rock outcrops to deal with and no ruts.

Apparently the road surface was good enough for folks to pull their motor boat/trailer to Red Lake from somewhere over in the direction of Longlegged Lake.  I passed a couple of those on my way in.  But it was still a pretty long drive into Leano and out from Onnie.

wow, that cow moose in today's POD (11/5/10) looks really emaciated - ribs showing, hips sunken in -  I've hear that on Isle Royale, the ticks get so bad, several thousand on a single moose, that they can literally suck the blood out of them - could be that's what happened to moosey?

of maybe just old

That's what WE thought.

Look at the hind leg. Does it look injured to you? We thought maybe it had injured its leg, or been hamstrung or something.

Frankly, the moose (which actually looked like a big calf more than a cow) looked shell-shocked. We paddled really close to it, and it just stood there at water's edge, dazed. Never moved a muscle, never batted an eyelash (do moose have eyelashes?)

The shot was obviously zoomed, but not by much.

We finally moved on, not wanting to bother it.

Title: Re: Picture of the day - POD (cont. 16)
Post by kypaddler on Nov 5th, 2010 at 5:40pm
Actually it was taken in the fall.

Sept. 18, to be exact.

This year.

It was on the east side of Agnes Lake in Quetico, just south of Louisa Falls. There's a little point right before you reach the falls. It was standing right on the edge of the lake.

I've seen a lot of moose over the years; usually they want no part of humans, in canoes or out.

This one just stood there like a statue. Maybe I'm reading too much into its eyes, but again, it looked just dazed. Never moved.

Thank you for the compliment, Starwatcher.

And "wintergreen" was my guess on the berries, also, but I don't know enough to say with certainty. I've been meaning to do a little research, but you know how that goes. I bow to anyone on the forum with superior knowledge. Anyone?

The most recent trip (mid- to late-September) seems like it happened two years ago. (Appreciate db posting the photos to bring it all back.)

"I don't know," he said, feeling ignorant and embarrassed.

(Basically I took a zillion photos of plants and trees, and I resolved to come back and research them. Haven't been able to, yet.)

The key word is "yet."

I still intend to.

In the meantime, surely someone out there is a botanist, professional or otherwise?

That flower was on Fauquier, btw.

So, how does one differentiate between wintergreen and bearberry.

Bearberry

I understand that Wintergreen is more of a ground cover plant, while Bearberry is more of a shrub, but I've seen pictures of Bearberry that look very much like a ground cover.  And based on the sample photos, it appears to me that the POD is Bearberry (leaf tip rounded) rather than Wintergreen (more pointed leaf tip).  Other than smelling the leaves, can anyone clear this up?

But, I guess the good news is ... both berries are edible and the leaves of both can be used to make a tea.

Thanks kypaddler and dd.

I know wintergreen and have seen bear berry.  I know wintergreen is good to eat and the bear berry looks good enough to eat.  Normally we see tons of wintergreen on our trips, but this year not a one.  Great photo!

And note that Dave (whose hand is holding the smallie sandwich) didn't cover the whole bread. He was being considerate, because that was his second or third, and the rest of us weren't finished with our first, yet.

What?  No lettuce?  You weren't the party we encountered at the BH/Quetico portage about 4 years ago with the huge plastic container of white bread were you?  Pascanell and I paddled away thinking that those guys must really like sandwiches.   ;D

Bearberry is a groundcover shrub (woody), a sprawler like a creeping juniper(J. hortizonalis). I usually observe it in and adjacent to rock outcroppings.

Wintergreen like bearberry is a deciduous evergreen woody perennial(shrub), with a similar shaped leaves but the wintergreen's is larger and in fewer numbers. Wintergreen is also stoloniferous, think underground strawberry runners, bearberry on the other hand is not- it is a creeper rerooting as it goes about its business. They both have light pinkish bell shaped flowers, from my recollection. Wintergreen's berries are larger than bearberry but both are red. They are woody shrubs (woody perennials) even though they are ground hugging in stature.

The fragrance of the foliage is probably one of the easiest ways to discern the difference...

The wintergreen that I have observed has been mostly growing in acid duff that is well drained, moist, and with good snowcover in the dead of winter and some filtered shade in summer...actually most of what I have observed for colonies have been found on a south easterly slope in combination with pine (jack and red) and then in WI (on sand with oak and white pine).

Thanks to all the photographers for sharing and thanks Marlin for the recent IDs. Pearly everlasting eh? It sounds so ubiquitous and if I ever see one in real life anytime soon, I may even remember what it is. ;) I've never noticed it before.
