i totally agree with you on this one! i have a very similar weight to the ones in your link, its quite old and it has a splitring on the bottom of it. it used to be a bait itself that i made into a weight. i usually run a treble hook with the front pointing barbed nipped off (so its a double hook that tucks up under the weight to reduce/eliminate snags) just in case a fish wants to hit it instead. ive never caught anything on the weight, but who knows!

also, in a similar idea to this is when jigging with drop shot rigs, instead of just using a sinker on the drop line, toss on a jig with a twister. you can bounce the bottom with the jig and dangle the other hook right at the depth you want. this allows you to try multiple colors at multiple depths! i generally go with a white/chartreuse upper bait with an orange twister on the jig. this simulates a baitfish up top and a crawfish on the bottom! its quite productive when fishing in deeper water and because of the nature of the drop shot rig, your hooks never get tangled.
