Title: Rental Cabin suggestions Post by jjcanoeguide on Oct 13th, 2010 at 4:48pm
After having our first child in June, my wife and I have decided that next year we will forego out typical 7-10 day canoeing trip. However, the lure of the northwoods is quite strong, so we're looking at renting a cabin on the edge of the BW, with a few day trips in mind. Anyone have a recommendation for a cabin or resort? I'm much more interested in being close to the BW and preferably on a lake than being close to town. All the modern conveniences are not necessary (tv, phone, microwave, etc.) but we would like a hot shower.
Thanks in advance for your help, J.J. |

If you are looking the Ely area check out Moose Track Adventures. They are right on Farm Lake (BW access) have some really nice cabins. Good people, too. Look at their website and see if that is what you have in mind.
On the Echo Trail, I have heard very good things about the Fenske Lake cabins, but we haven't stayed there (yet.) On the Gunflint, I think it is hard to beat Clearwater. It is such a beautiful lake with direct BW access, and they have wonderful cabins with docks right on the lake. Each one seems to have a bit of privacy, too. But there are lots of other cabins available, too, all along the Gunflint. We have stayed at the Little Ollie Cabin at Poplar Creek and enjoyed that, but it is a large cabin. I believe they have a smaller one also. They are more secluded than some, lake nearby but not really on the lake. We also rented a cabin at Nor'Wester once, which is right on Poplar Lake. It was a nice enough cabin, not fancy, had a dock right on the lake, and there was a good swimming beach nearby. Just a few suggestions. I am sure you can find more if you keep looking. |

JJ--My wife and I have stayed a couple of times at the Northernair Lodge, which is about 4 miles or so south of Ely on highway 21. It's on a small lake called Mitchell Lake, and is very nice. Mitchell Lake has no public access, so it's pretty quiet. They have free canoes and small motor boats to rent. The fishing is pretty decent, and you're not very far from Ely. Oh, and they allow dogs!
