Title: the story of "Fay"?
Post by kypaddler on Oct 20th, 2010 at 2:09pm
Some 10 to 12 years ago, a couple of fellow paddlers stumbled on a "memorial," for lack of a better word, on a remote area of a high cliff in Quetico, with a stunning view.

It was a marker with the name "Fay" carved on it, propped up in a cairn of rocks, with a memento or two.

They didn't disturb it but were full of questions.

A few weeks ago, we were in the neighborhood, and decided to see if we could find it again. It took some climbing, and some navigating  through tangled bush, but we did. The marker is weathered, but the presence of other mementos suggested it has been visited periodically over the last decade.

Again, we treated it with reverence, but our curiosity is piqued. I don't want to invade someone's privacy ... but I'm wondering whether anybody knows the story of "Fay" and the memorial.

You can PM me if you want ... and rest assured I have no intention of revealing the location or doing anything with the information other than answering a question in my head.

Peace,

kypaddler

May 06 I was on solo trip on east end of Sturgeon lk. I stopped at island campsite and found this brass plaque on birch tree near the waters edge.

In Memory of Brett
His soul is with God
But his heart is here
1959-1991

I think there are probably many memorials/plaques scattered thru the area.
I would hope no one decides that since the sites are not occupied that there souvenirs/ booty rather than tributes to loved ones lost.

In my mind it adds to the mystique of the wilderness.
