........... and in springtime, bears looking for an easy meal! its one of the options used where baiting for bears has been made illegal.


whether you're worried about coyotes, wolves, or bears or not, consider and keep in mind that a predator coming in for prey is a different animal than one otherwise casually encountered -

example -  maybe 8 or 10 yuears ago or so a mountain biker in a local park was riding down a trail when a deer blasted across in front of him; he stopped, and close upon the deer's trail (but not close enough)was a mountain lion - the lion gave up on the deer in frustration, and turned on the mtn biker - he was able to fend off the cat by holding his bike in front of him like a shield.  Now that cat had probably seen literally hundreds of people in that park, probably scores that very day as its a busy place, and never bothered anybody -- but chasing that deer had put it into hunting mode, and it wasn't too picky at that point, just hungry and frustrated.
