That's on an island campsite on the North end of Alice Lake.  I've had a couple other photos already posted that I took that same misty morning.  I love being the first one up in our group and watching the sun come up.  Other members of our group appreciate waking up to the warm fire and fresh brewed coffee I provide from my early rise habit.

THis may not be the right forum but in the Last POD you were talking about spiders. Here is one we found on our tent overall it was about he size of a fifty cent piece and the "Shell" on its back was about the size of a quarter. Any insight as to this creature?

It'll be -20 here with windchill of -25 tonight. Tomorrow it's supposed to get up to +10, but the windchill -35. Glad I got my outside work done today.

I think we'll stay above zero tonight (low forecast is for between 4 - 5 degrees).  High tomorrow will be perhaps a half-dozen degrees higher than you.  Hopefully we'll miss out of the 50 mph winds we had around here today.

Texas doesn't get too many -20 degree days ... only remember a few from my high school days.

Thanks - BTW we're fresh out of PODs as of today. People often email and say here's a link to a bunch, feel free to go grab a few. That doesn't work out so well for me. I'd much rather people email the actual shots THEY would like to share as PODs.

Captions are optional. However any one wants to do that is fine by me.

Ideally, images need be only slightly larger than the displayed PODs which are normally 650 pixels wide. Level horizons are always a plus ;). If someone who knows what they are doing and sends 650px wide, web compressed jpgs that weigh in at roughly 100K or less (depending on subject matter), that would be awesome. Not a big deal though.

Is that a timberline under there? Pretty but no thank you.  ;D

Ahhh, but that white stuff will soon be water to paddle in... and the Timberline will be free again.

Hi, folks.  Not to take anything away from Jennifer, my wife of 22 years, who has taught me almost everything I know and kept me alive and kicking all these years, but the photos are actually mine.  I sent them to DB via our home email, which, of course, is in Jen's name.  Most were taken with a simple point and shoot camera.  Glad you enjoy...it's fun to find the time to take photos and share with others.

I suspect that you are correct mastertanger, that Marlin did confirm my post.  I suppose he could have stated how he liked the photo, and not just quote me.  I didn't intent to raise a ruckus, but the ;) seemed to me to imply that it wasn't sincere when I was sincere.

I really like todays picture.  It shows a side of canoe country we don't often see in photos -- windy, raw, cold.  I look at that picture and imagine myself huddled down under a tarp, sipping a cup of chicken noodle soup, and beating my buddy (again), in cribbage.

I agree, seems like typical weather we get on a lot of our trips.  I liked the horizontal wind sock; we don't bring a wind sock, but we can tell when the wind is blowing when our tent is horizontal in the wind.    ;)

In deer camp this year, we could tell the wind was blowing when one tent, which had been anchored with no fewer than 14 stakes, suddenly lifted up and took off.

Minutes, later, the second tent became a hot air balloon as well. That one, however, left a few stakes (and half the rain fly) behind.

Of course, that was the evening of the tornado warning ....

But I agree with Starwatcher and Prouboy -- the photo says "Quetico."

Today's photo was from last year, early July, on Yum Yum looking north from the campsite just north of the portage from Grey.  The storm was just north of us and we heard when we returned to Ely a few days later that it had spawned severe thunderstorms and a smallish tornado or two.  Thankfully, we had just a few sprinkles and some moderate wind around midnight.

Great pic today pineknot! Thats my kind of picture, three rods rigged and ready! ;)

I have never commented on a pic but this one seems to be compositionally perfect. Extraordinary really. I especially like how the evergreen on the right fingers into and adds depth. A lesser eye would of purposely omitted it (like me ;) ). Well done my friend.

So can somebody tell me WHY I like this pic?  I think understanding why I like it would make me a better photographer.  Visual art is not my forte.  I try hard but...

Love today's POD, too! I think the composition is fantastic, with the line of scrubby orange grass, and the angle of the rocks. I wish I had that kind of eye for photography. Well done!

I think why it's so compelling even though it's just " a photo of rocks, trees, and water.  Been there, done that, right? ", is becasue of the way it's composed.

I'd call it a " artsy" photograph for lack of a better word.
Some people can master the technical aspects of photography, but without an " eye" for it, you can never quite get it right :'(

Okay, as an amateur artist; here’s my read on the design elements:

The center of interest are light areas; (the sky on the horizon).

The line of grass,  dark cloud fingers, horizon and the shore line point and lead you to the center of interest. The dark trees and clouds frame the picture.

Dramatic Design elements include putting dark against light (The dark
sky and the horizon against the center of interest); And warm colors against cool ( The pink water against the light blue sky)

And complementary colors are pleasing to the eye ( reddish brown grass and brush against the green trees)

Now, don’t analysis it; just look it and enjoy it. :)

I guess that's the difference between artists and a dunderhead like me.  Artists instinctively see that kind of stuff, I guess, whereas most of that would not have occurred to me at all.  Heck, I'm pretty sure that I never would have even considered taking out my camera there, much less getting the composition right.

Still, I like to believe I can learn.  It'll never come naturally but maybe someday I can see at least some of the shots I've been missing AND manage to not screw up the composition too badly.

The rules for good composition are fairly simple to pick up and very effective.  Lots of good sources on the web.

Chicken and dumplings this night. Punctuated with singing boreal owls, a death squeal, and a juvenile loon. A fine end to a balmy 60's day in mid October, the winds came the next day.

The last series of POD's have been outstanding.
I find it both fascinating and more than a little frustrating when someone takes a picture of something that many can see, but few can make magic 8-)

The seeing is the magic, part of the journey. We all have eyes and noggins to ponder with, I hope. Maybe it is about the journey, that perspective that is generated; pulled on through so many inputs and outputs. Me I am just playfully seeking beauty, but desiring to walk through the threshold of the present to something more and seeing and sharing, you only know, as I go.

Does anyone shoot large format here? Because that is a place that i would like to go.

Yeah, some of you have other talents, like good fishing abilities; as noted in your avitar Snow-Dog. (Who will help me eat the fish, said The Little Red Hen)  :)  Last time I went fishing I cast my rod, hook, line and sinker overboard never to be seen again.  If anyone finds them, please let me know.  We all have are special talents and all can work as a team to have a successful trip. ;)

(I notice the date on the quote is from Dec 31st, 1969.  It's about time that I got back and commented on this statement.  I was a Sophomore in high school, but this year is my 40th reunion. :))

Where is this spot of old stress?

Along the portage between Emeral Lake and Plough Lake. It is a beautiful portage with some of the oldest white cedar in the Quetico at the start of the portage on the Emerald Lake end.

Being a geologist that's one of my favorite rocks!!!  Bacon Rock, like Dorothy Molter had on her island -  Iron ore formation and red jasper.  Nice!  [smiley=thumbup.gif]

Emerald?

Yes,  while on a walk in the woods behind the campsite, we found this makeshift place to sit.  It would be a great place to read and watch everything around you.  It was in a low spot.  I only sat for a moment, but I'm sure the person who put it together spent some time there......

Today's POD must be the famous Louisa Falls jacuzzi; definitely worth the trip to relax after a hard day of portaging from Sunday Lake!

Actually, Mary is in the water at the falls between Sheridan and Carp.  Louisa Falls is much bigger!!!

What canoe is that in the POD today?  Looks like a hybrid tripping/marathon canoe.  I bet it's fast!

Looks like the Wenonah Itasca.

Yes,  that is my newest canoe, an Itascan.  19 feet long.  Wooden gunnels.  It took me a while to be proficient at getting it over my head.  It is WIDER where you grab it to throw it up over your head!!  I actually developed tendinitis the first year I had it.  It is a beautiful canoe though and rides very well in big waves and it perpenducilar waves.....Kim
