I'd go with a solo. Lots of solos are longer than lots of tandems.
The big item is that you want to be as close to center as possible. This allows you to maintain trim easier in all situations. If you're used to tandem seat positions there will be a little adjustment to your paddle stroke in a solo. A little more corrective strokes. The C stroke is common in a solo.
