Title: Stranger in the Forest
Post by intrepid_camper on May 7th, 2011 at 2:16pm
Although not about North American adventures, Stranger in the Forest, On Foot Across Borneo by Eric Hansen is a fascinating book.  It is about the American author's journey on foot across the island of Borneo in 1982.  He gets across with the help of native guides who know the rain forest inside and out and who can live self sufficiently by hunting and gathering for food.  After several months in the forest he can't wait to get OUT; but his first disappointing experiences once back in civilization send him back into the forest he has come to love.  He decides to walk back across...and does.

Thanks IC, I might have to give that one a go. If you like those kinds of reads IC let me suggest a few I have found you might like by Redmond O'Hanlon.

NO Mercy...........a journey into the heart of the Congo
In Trouble Again........a journey between the Orinoco and the Amazon

I would be glad to send them if you promise I'll get them back ;).

Thanks for the suggestions MT.  Mailing back and forth is kind of a pain.  I'll see if I can get them through our home library.  IC

There you go...........

I thought it interesting that the natives really cruise when they go through the jungle. Very little has a chance to get on them is the reasoning.
