Title: Latest bear news from Stephen Herrero Post by Joe_Schmeaux on May 12th, 2011 at 5:38am
No real changes in advice compared to his original 1985 book, just more and better bear attack statistics. Still, everyone always likes to read about bears, even if it's old news, right?
Here's a link to a NYT article + interview vid summarizing Herrero's latest publication: (You need to Login or Register And here's a link to the original publication abstract. (You need to pay to get the full article, but if you have access to a university library, you may be able to use their subscription.) (You need to Login or Register |

Mostly what I take from this is stuff I already know. Attacks causing death are exceedingly rare.

Thanks for posting that. I had already knew from his previous book that the black bear mothers were not nearly as defensive as mama griz but I thought it interesting that males were responsible for most attacks resulting in death. That seems, based on his audio interview, to be a surprising finding from what was previously known.
Sure attacks are rare but what has my attention is I believe the risk factors go up considerably when you are solo as opposed to a group. Rough way to go. I'll just travel my usual style..........rather quietly.......... pausing from time to time to listen.............and being armed and dangerous myself. >:( |
