Guys,

Just thought I would mention that I had my cedar strip out this weekend and tried to see if my fish finder would shoot thru the hull. It did no probs. I had read reports in the past that they won't shoot thru a cedar strip hull but I didn't have any problems. The hull is standard 1/4" cedar strips, with epoxy and 6 ounce fiberglass on both sides. The finder is the Garmin Echo 100.

We did fairly well, although I expected the action to be a bit better as it usually is at that spot. 4 adults and 2 kids, we managed 7 walleye, 12 pike and maybe 6 smallies, over 2 days. The weather was a bit off (rain) but in my mind not severe enough to put down the fish - in fact I was thinking it was going to be really great... I would have expected 4 x the bass, double the pike and double the walleye. I did manage to catch a really nice walleye though - 29" long by 15" around 9 1/2 lbs. I'll post a pic when I get the files from my buddy.

I would dearly love to shoot through the hull but can't decide wether to rig like DD and have a puddle of water or rig like OS and mount in some silicone. How did you rig Moonman?

I didn't rig it permanently, all I did was test it by dropping the transducer into a ziplock bag. I did convert the power to AA's, which was easy, I still have to cut and splice the transducer cable. I just used a suction cup from an old finder to mount  the transducer to the side of the boat. I have done a lot of reading on this on the various forums so what I will do is use silicone to mount a foam (I'll use minicell I think) cutout to the bottom of the canoe. Then I just pour in some water, pop in the transducer and we are off to the races. I figure the silicone will allow me to remove the foam a lot easier than epoxy, if it ever needs removing.

A word of caution about using a foam cup for water. What you don't want most of all is to have air bubbles between the transducer and the water. That would be create a certain source of interference on the display.
I would be very surprised if you could get a clear, precise performance out of a locater shooting through foam of any kind.

Actually, I wont be shooting through the foam at all, The foam will represent the outline shape of the transducer, only to hold the transducer in that spot - there will be no foam under the transducer just the water and then the hull.
