The only time I no longer wear a PFD is in my neighbors pool :P  A fancy one isn't needed, just one that will work for you and be comfortable enough to keep on. I second the "You will actually feel awkward without it" by Mastertangler. When I soloed last year, I was so used to wearing it I often forgot to take it off after I had gotten to camp, set it up, and started fishing from shore
