I used them for a long time, but I found that for the way I store my tent fly/ Dri-Fly tarp, they ended up tangling so bad I was always untangling them.
I don't roll/fold my fly like some do, I just stuff it in it's sack. For my style, I found that plain guy-lines with the ends sealed worked best for me with a Truckers Hitch.
Yes, you need to exercise some restraint when using it. Doesn't take much to get a lot of tension on a line. I get it snug but allow for a little line stretch under load.
