Title: future trip
Post by Steve on Nov 21st, 2011 at 12:44pm
Hi, longtime paddler, first time poster to this site.
I'm taking a sabbatical next summer.  Will start with a five week canoe trip, the first three solo.  The compromise with my wife is that I will do the solo in (the more populated) BWCA with a Spot GPS Messenger before heading to Quetico with the friend who will be joining me at Cache Bay for the final two weeks.
Anyway, I'm looking at beginning the solo at Crane Lake and meandering my way east to the Sag entry.  Aside from a trip last summer that started at Fall and went up to Ensign, Kekekabic and down through Insula and the Kawishiwi River, I've done most of my BWCA paddling in the central and eastern parts of the park.  Any "must sees" for the northwest/west BWCA?

I like the pocket to eugene lakes out of snow bay on lac la croix. Come back out pocket creek to lac la croix and camp on the islands west of warrior hill. Pictographs on lac la croix and warrior hill are fun. Then rebecca falls northwest corner of iorn lake. Curtain falls going into Crooked. Or out of Iron go down the Beartrap to Sunday lake, to Beartrap Lake over to Fourtown to Horse up to Lower Basswood Falls.

A friend of mine who guided canoe trips in the BW for 4 years said, "West is the best!"  I absolutely love the Little Indian Sioux River, as well as most of the areas around LLC, Iron & Crooked.  Lots of good bays to explore in that area.

There should also be a set of picto's just south of Curtain Falls on the US side, but I haven't confirmed those yet (which I'll do in early June).  If you decide to paddle Crooked to Lower Basswood Falls, there are a number of picto panels north of Lower Basswood Falls on the US side.

It's been mentioned already, but Iron and Crooked Lake, along the northwest border, are fantastic lakes.
