OH. MY. GOSH. my dream has come true. the new rapala releases for 2012. the deep jointed husky jerk. ive wanted that forever. i very nearly started picking up storm deep jointed minnow sticks because i wanted it so bad. now i can stick with rapala! im so excited. also the xrap prop (a rip off smithwick, i know) looks awesome. just what i need. another lure to spend money on.

After all ... its the Christmas season!   ;D

Fishing lures are all guaranteed to work.  They're all designed to catch anglers.   :D

Enjoy your toys, I know I enjoy mine.  I'll likely pick one or two up come springtime.

Runs at only 4' - 8'.  How does that qualify for "deep?"  Assuming we're talking about fishing canadian shield I'll pass.  If they can get it to at least 12' I might find it (more) useful.  16' would be better.  I have a Rapala Sliver in my tackle box that gets trolling action but I can get that down to 12'.

Also check out the Dives-To ("DT") series. I have a few of both DT12's and DT16's. They are designed to reach these depths when casting too.

Rapala's have gotten so expensive you need to take snorkel gear in the event of a snag!  :o

@mt... i happened to "stumble" upon the rapala website when she was sitting next to me and i may have said which color patterns would be effective where i fish ;)

@phantom, how does that sliver work? ive been thinking about trying one of those too (before i saw the new jointed deep hj). im pretty sure trolled you could get 10 ft pretty easy and 15 on a thin enough diameter super line with a bit more line out. jointed ones never seem to run as deep because of the drag and bend from the joint. but im confident you could hit 12' fairly consistently with them.

The Sliver is on my bait caster with 10# fire line.  I troll with it while travelling and it starts to hit bottom at 12' w/ approx. 40' of line out.  It has less pull and drag than TT or DT rap's probably because the lip is smaller and I assume the swimming action is more compact (tighter).  It's a great lure in May - June, when I typically trip.  Trout love it - so do the Walleye's.  I must have an older color pattern as I see it's not offered anymore (white belly/black back).  In my experience; big lures = big fish.

They are only made in the one size (08)? A bigger, deeper running, jointed would be nice.

Another decent Rapala for trolling in Quetico is the 7" Countdown Magnum.  If you want to find out what lurks in the thermocline 20-30 feet below your canoe in the warmer months (July, Aug.), get the perch pattern.
