Title: Picto at South McAree
Post by DentonDoc on Dec 1st, 2011 at 5:27am
I was reviewing Furtman's book and he suggest that there might be a picto on southern McAree (western shore live above Rebecca Falls.

Has anyone found this picto?  What symbols are present?  Do you remember any details about the location?

Thx.

Yes, I found it in 2007.  It is small and not significant.

Here it again a bit larger.  It is an abstract?  Not really sure.

Thanks, TF.

Any chance you visited the picto site SE of Curtain Falls (on the US side)?

I did in the early 80's before I started taking pictures of the pictographs. I want to see it again before I officially count it in my quest to see all the pictographs in the BWCA and Quetico.  I only have 5 sites left out of 60. You must be planning a trip....

Then someone will poke into an area and find a new one!  (I found one in June on Donald Lake the WCPP staff didn't know about.  They had a crew go back to the area later without my coordinates and found yet another one slightly further west.)

I'll be making a reverse "Z" trip this year:  In at Bottle Portage, then east.  Northeast thru the Rolands to Darkwater, then east thru William and Conmee ... maybe as far as Burt before reversing course.

Are they still finding new ones?

5/60 left, kudos!

Are there any that aren't in reasonable proximity to water? I consider the one on Montgomery to be in reasonable proximity at some point in time. Has anyone ever tried to date these things by evidence of water levels over time?

I don't think they have.  I only know that experts consider them to be somewhere between 300-400 years old based on when the Ojibwe have lived in the area.  Also, lichen that has grown over pictographs has a known rate of growth and that has been used to date them. Schoolcraft (1850) noted some in his explorations and drew them.  Other explorers asked their guides "who did these?" and they said they didn't know.  I also heard that the Montgomery Creek pictographs may be older (from Park personnel).  Bob Evans and Edwind Trout have researched all the pictos and have been publishing "Bulletins" so that people can find them easier.  They include lots of interesting facts in the brochures also.  I went with them to Swartman lake.  We bushwhacked there a few years ago.  People have come out of the woods literally to tell the of sights that are not known about.  There are some interesting stories to tell about these new pictographs and hopefully they will share them with everyone sometime. Happy pictograph hunting.  Kim

Thanks for the info Kim. I thought the creek pictos were "bolder" than most I've seen and therefore more recent. Plus they covered some spalling. No real clue though.

Hope you don’t mind but I looked at the previous pictures at the above address and saw a rock wall. Is the wall where the creek pictos are?

How dare you peak!  :D

Yup. They'd be hard to miss. Could be others too though I suppose. That's just where I happened to stop looking that day.  ;)

Yeah, that's sort of like the other 'woody' on Darky as I recall. I've also have it from two seemingly reliable sources that that campsite is ummm, inhabited. One preferred not to camp there again.

KF and I camped there a few years ago.  I strung my hammock from the two trees directly above those pictos. The hammock was so near the edge I tied rocks to my tarp tie outs and dropped then over the edge.  What a view!!  I remember awaking to get my nightly relief and looking out of the hammock without raising my head I could see all the way to the north end of the lake.

I've also found a picto on Agnes not on the maps or in Furtman's book.  But I'm not telling where it is  ;)

Heh, reminds me of calculus class.

Johnny was the smartest.  Nobody could solve the problem.  Teacher asked Johnny if he knew, which of course he did.  Johnny refused to provide the answer.  Teacher asked why.  Johnny answered, "The less you know, the more I do."   ;D

Since several have questioned why I wouldn't post the location on the general, open forum, let me explain.

I have personally seen individuals touching pictos as well as intentionally splashing water on them "to make sure they were real".  This attitude is what I seek to protect pictos,  artifacts and other cool spots from.  To several of my friends, pictograph sites are considered spirtual.  Out of respect for them, I choose not to divulge additional spots that we have discovered on a searchable forum.

If you are truly interested in finding a faint, abstract picto in an out of the travel-way location, please become a Inukshuk, as I'll post the location there.  Otherwise, you could PM me.

Sounds reasonable, thanks!

Regarding water, considering the rain, snow, hail, ice I doubt that splashing water would be an issue.

Folks should not touch.  These things are temporary.  Nobody does it anymore.  Eventually they'll be lost.
