Every year they hold the Ultimate Fishing Show in Novi MI.
My paper of choice the Detroit Free Press/News has a outdoor writer named Eric Sharp.  He's been their outdoor writer for as long as I can remember.
He's a straight shooter and calls it as he sees it.
Every year he picks a few items that he thinks are/will be winners.

These are Mi made and as far as he knows, unique to the sport.
I don't think the prices are much worse than the well known big names.
