I had a friend bring one about ten years back and I have been fascinated by them ever since for wilderness camping. It was amazing to me how accurate it was.

Pay me enough and I'll do it to.  Then I get to enjoy the wilderness and get paid for it.  Any Voyageur jobs posted in the want ads lately?

By the way, we use Sherpas. Used to be when they were kids we would have to carry all there stuff.  Now that we're older with our health issues they are the ones running across the portages with double loads while we are struggling.  :D

Sherpas are ok & very durable.  Portage monkeys are way cheaper.  Will work for peanuts.

So a 10 ounce sherpa that fits in your pocket will make or break you or you'll have to get paid to carry it?   :'( Sure am glad I dont trip with any of you. My main use is for traveling or fishing, it is a very nice to be able to tell if a front is coming in based on barometric pressure, or if this would be a real good day to fish real hard or paddle real hard, a good night to really button down or not or sleep under the stars. For me and the limited time I have tripping in Quetico it is worth the 10 ounces I have to carry for the benefit it provides. Peace out

I was going to make a similar comment but held off till someone else did. I knew someone would!
I actually googled it and couldn't come up with what you might be referring to.
I think it would be cool if my tripping partner would bring one, wind speed, temp. and forecast could be interesting.
I'm just carrying too many gadgets that do not get used enough to justify. My other gadgets cover a lot of the same things.   

It might have been helpful if you had explained in your initial post that there was an electronic meaning for "sherpa".  I do believe it was new to most of us.   ;)

I, too, googled "sherpa" and didn't come up with anything weather-related.

It looks like a neat item.

Thanks for the education.  I just put it on my "possible future gadgets list."

We smart asses don't necessarily object to becoming smarter.

We do, however, tend to put newbies to task when their deviations from common parlance come into play w/o explanation.   ::)

Much like pajeff, I'd like to see one of my tripping partners bring along such a gizmo.  It could be kind of neat.  As for me, I've probably already exceeded what Mrs. Jimbo will let me get away with purchasing... at least until Copia rolls around.

How does the the anemometer feature work on this device?  I've taken a small, hand-held one on a past trip or two ... it worked, but not well.  It always seemed to register wind speed substantially lower than actual.  Most other sensors (temp, barometer, etc) were already integrated to another device (e.g., GPS, wrist watch) I was already taking.

Oh. I get it.  Yeah, I was a smart @ss, but we always talk about bringing Sherpas on our trips.

It just made sense to me.  So, it sounded good that you wanted to bring Sherpas too.

I'm always predicting weather for our group based on wind direction, speed and clouds.   One of our cooks brought a fancy thermometer for cooking so he is also able to provide us with the air temperature within a tenth of a degree.  Now I agree and think that sounds great to have a gadget for barometric pressure.

Based on the responses I received here I will go back to lurking here and using this sight in that way. Its the attitude of asking a dumb question or one that is not understood. I was trying to contribute, I am new here and I didn't appreciate the response. There are much more professional sights on the net that I receive info and contribute were the moderators attitude reflects in the all the people that post on the sight and I like it. I would say this is not such a site. Good luck to everyone and peace out.

At the time we commented, YOU had offered no explanation of what you were referring to.  The above definition reflects common parlance and is about all we were left with.

I'll allow the quality of the rest of the site speak for itself.  It needs no defense from me.  From my perspective, bigpike, your behavior is a bit thin-skinned.  Spend any time at all on this website & you will encounter some good-natured banter.  I'll also stand on our responses (both of us "smart asses") once you clarified matters.  We thanked you for your inputs & welcomed you.

You are still welcome to post but I am not prepared to accept your criticism of website etiquette.  I am not convinced you have enough experience here to know what you are talking about.

When I first read the subject line, I thought it was going to be about the "need" for Sherpa types to haul gear across portages, not some electronic gadget.

Who would know that the name Sherpa was being used in that way?
I hope bigpike reconsiders his hasty decision.

Well, if "peace out" means you are not going to read any more posts, you may not see this, but I guess I want to put in my two cents also.

You were NOT trying to contribute when you called members of this site (not sight, but site) smartasses!  Or said that they did not know what a sherpa is.  We do know what a sherpa is, we just didn't happen to know that there is an electronic instrument that is also called by that name.  Your question didn't explain what you were talking about, and we assumed the common usage and definition of the term, a usage and definition, I might point out, that has been around for centuries.

When I first read your question, after my initial desire to try to correct your usage of there/their in the subject line (which I resisted because I didn't want to be a smartass English-teacher type, by the way  ;D ), I wanted to post a reply saying "huh?"

But I figured someone on this site would know what you were talking about, so I waited to see what responses would come.  And, lo and behold, the first few responses were just what I thought--people thought you were talking about a sherpa to carry your packs!  Go figure!

And how do you respond to their ignorance?  By calling names! 

Thank you for posting the link to the gadget and educating us.  It looks like a fine piece of equipment.  Since my husband and I don't even take a GPS, we probably won't rush out and buy one, but I do like electronic gadgets, so it was interesting to read about it.

This isn't a "professional" type of site.  It is a group of friends and acquaintances who post online to share information about canoeing and the canoe country.

You aren't the only one who is insulted by the "attitude" of someone in this thread.  And I don't just lurk here.  When people insult my friends, sometimes I post, too.

Thanks to you.  I was also unsure.

I tend to get existential about the weather when I'm out there.  There's nothing you can do about it.  May as well enjoy what you can.  Two or three times I've cut a trip short because the weather was so miserable.  It must be very miserable, I've stuck it out through hurricanes & tornadoes & snow & half the trip wind-bound.

I started a response, but deleted it as it got too long.
Short version, no, would not be interested in taking a barometer. I have spent a lot of time out doors, most of it on farm equipment, but a good share just being outside in the open. I don't need assistance in knowing what the weather is going to do in the next few hours and a very good idea what the marrow will bring.  Now, if it would let me know exactly what the weather is going to be in two days, different story.
Not sure i would bring along a Sherpa either, too may people, but a portage monkey sure would be handy in getting my bear bag rope unsnagged! ;)
