The vertical rod holder are for use while fishing. I always pack away everything on portages. They aren't in the way at all although it might seem like that. There is about  6-8 inches or so between my feet and the rod butts. I found that I like the rods in front of me, instead of behind my seat pointing back out the stern. They would get tangled all the time (with lures on 'em). This system works well, keeps everything more or less organized and easy to reach.
