p_k, probably answered your question for me. The distance he sited sounds about right too me. So much depends on start time/your physical condition and of course wind and waves. I 2x-3x if the conditions warrant. Common sense should be your guide. Solo, you need to constantly be thinking AHEAD and anticipating the worst case scenario if you do whatever. No sense in blowing out your knee/ankle/back trying to avoid an extra trip across a rough section of portage. One of the best things about going solo IMHO is that you set the pace and can do what you want, whenever you want. I've found for my style that an early as possible start makes for the best balance between distance/exertion and time to fish/take pictures. I'm on water by 7 am most travel mornings and try to get some mileage before the morning sun heats the water and the wind/waves pick-up. I don't think I'd make any major modifications the first time out. Maybe the portage yoke thing I mentioned and taking out the extra seat and adding an extra thwart like p_k mentioned. Your first trip will be a get acquainted trip if you get the tandem. After a few days you'll know what needs to be changed to meet your tripping style. |
