I tried searching the site and didn't find anything gear discussion on camp saws. I've been using a Sawvivor saw for the past few years and have had no issues with it but it seems a bit flimsy so i was thinking about picking up a back up saw just in case.  Was originally just going to get a second sawvivor but have been reading good things online about the Sven saw.  This got me thinking that there may be other saws out there that I should be considering.  If anyone has any recommendations on camp saws it would be greatly appreciated.  Thanks.

I've used the Sven for a long time.  Did find the 21 in version much better than the 15 in.  I change the blades every few years.

The first saw I ever had was a Sven.  I got it sometime around 1970 and used it right through until 2009 when it finally gave up the ghost.  So I can't complain about it - it certainly did the job and back in the day there weren't many options.  However, and I'm banging this same drum again, I replaced the Sven with this, the Fast Bucksaw:

This baby is so far superior in every way to the Sven, it's unbelievable.  The Fast Bucksaw is so well thought out - well made, lightweight, fold away with no loose parts and cuts so straight and true that you could practically use it for a furniture saw.  Just about my favorite piece of kit - 5 stars out of 5!  I've also used the Sawvivor and others - not in the same ball park.

I think I'm gonna buy this one.

Kerry, couldn't agree with you more. I bought a FastBuck saw from Piragis probably 25 years ago... I didn't know that was the name of it until I saw your post. It was a great saw. It finally broke on last years Q trip. Bummer. I would highly recommend this saw to anyone looking for a well made saw that can cut thu a 6 inch limb in no time at all. I bought a Sven and I much prefer the Fastsaw.

Didn't know there was a lifetime warranty. Nice perk.

Probably will switch to the FastBuck if my Sven ever breaks but it's still going strong.  Don't saw enough really thick stuff to purchase anything else until Sven fails.

I picked up a Soderholm 12" bow saw at Fleet Farm for $12 or so - fantastic little saw, light and sturdy.  Often out of stock.  They always have blades for it.  Curious extra - it holds a standard hack saw blade.

I have a sven saw that I've had for years - its the second one I've bought.  The first saw gave out - where the two dimples? stick out that hold the traingle in position, one bent or broke to where the saw would collapse.

Used to bring the Sven to Quetico, but we don't generally cut big logs for firewood (don't base camp, so generally only would gather enough smaller wood for a single campfire).
For the past 8 or 10 years or whatever, we just bring the little Gerber that has a blade that slides back into the handle - effective enought for clearing a way thru blowdown and for cutting some firewood, and only weighs 3.5 ozs or so - I'd think for a "backup" saw, that would be better as its smaller and lighter than the other options, but whatever.  I guess if you do all or most of your cooking over a fire, having a bigger/heavier duty saw as a backup would make sense, especially if you bring an axe for splitting the bigger stuff.

The 2 person Oregon saws we used after the '99 blowdown did quite a number on some larger diameter stuff.  Only took us about 20 minutes to cut clear through a 2' diameter cedar trunk.

The saw I like is made by a guy not far from me in Northern MN. They sell it at Piragis and Duluth Pack.

I've used both Fiskars and Buck brand pruning saws.

Buck is better, sturdier.

A nice home project is to make a collapsing buck saw.
