On a related note...my trust in the accuracy of both McKenzie and Fischer maps has plummeted in recent years.  A few years ago I had to change my trip route when I couldn't find a portage that was shown on a McKenzie map.  I turned out the portage didn't exist.  I talked to the Superintendent of QP and he said the Park doesn't support these maps, that the only map to trust, in terms of portages, is the official QP map.   

My trip this month revealed several smaller errors, like wrong position of portages, on both the McKenzie and the official map! 

(An aside: I met Jackfish for the first time on my recent QP trip.  We met on the mile-long Badwater/Quetico portage. Talking with Jackfish made the portage bearable!)

I still bring the Mckenzie maps, as well as the offcial map. I hope that between them, Ill be able to figure things out!

Have others experience inaccuracies in these maps?

You're correct about the inaccuracies of Fisher & McKenzie. Here is my plan. I carry both plus Chrismar. Prior to travel, I check Chrismar against Fisher for portage info, and note any dicrepancies on my Fisher. I use Fisher for travel days as it usually requires fewer map changes. I use McK for fishing. The better scale does better at showing likely pinchpoints, reefs, etc that hold fish. I also mark possible campsites on my McK using a number to show PCD info regarding number of tent pads & overall rating. This helps save time when hunting campsites, as we will only check those that have enough pads for the size group we have.

well yeah, but that one has errors also - they all do

I have several notes on my Fisher maps pointing out wrong locations for portages - I suppose if I bought a whole new set, maybe some of those errors would have been corrected by now, but likely not

as for portages marked that don't exist - some may have been abandoned or re-routed to a new location.  I like to look at the Ontario Basic Mapping map for portages - just like the campsites on there, there are some old portages indicated that are hard to find if you can find them at all

FWIW - Chrismar would love to hear of discrepancies on his maps. There was once a post about that when QJ sold then. I only knew of the one obvious (to me) one.

They've never been accurate

All maps of Q have inacuracies. That's part of the adventure/exploration that makes trips fun. If someone has the mindset that they will find AAA roadside assistance and trip-tics, that someone will be disappointed. :'(

Just like in real life, portages are lost and misplaced. What I do, is to look at all 3 maps, and try to figure out where it makes the most sense to place a portage...doesn't always work out that way.

I do same as Proudboy - carry Chrismar, Fisher, and MacKenzie.  I hand scribble notes from PCD and tips on bulletin boards or by email/messages on my Mckenzie, and cross check pictos and camp sites, etc.  May even print a google earth view.

I have grown to like to plan in my house and tend to lay out all of tme McKenzies and Fishers on my floor - usually in dead of winter - and figure out which if any I need to buy, and order them through their websites - and find it most economical.  I feel bad that I'm not supporting the outfitter, but I always have the maps I want.  I don't feel so bad about not supporting REI or Cabellas.
