I was fishing a small bay on the southwestern side of Lac La Croix this past week. I saw hundreds of these little "jellyfish" looking things floating in the water! They were about the size of a nickle, swam like jellyfish, and the little white bodies in the thing circular membrane continually moved. DOES ANYONE KNOW WHAT THIS IS?

About 15 years ago my son's high school science teacher told him about these...we hardly believed it because in 45 years of living on our lake we had never noticed them. So this time of year we went out to a quiet bay and sure enough, there they were...freshwater jellyfish!
Here is another perplexer: What is this? Found it in quiet shallow water in late July on Namakan lake.

Way cool photo, Prouboy! I agree: freshwater jellyfish; I've heard of them, but never seen 'em. They sometimes show goodly numbers in late summer and fall, and they are catching zooplankton. Same food for Intrepid Camper's critters which are colonial bryozoans (another tiny invertebrate, but this one forms large gelatinous masses (see (You need to Login or Register ). The lime green forms below that, in Camper's pic, may be freshwater sponges, yet a third phylum of invertebrates!

South Central Indiana is potholed with mined out coal "strip pits" that are nearly always donated by the coal companies to the State Department of Natural Resources. The Greene-Sullivan State Forest is the nearest example. They are all alive with these same freshwater jellyfish. I have seen clouds of them the size of cars , all moving in unison. If you pick one up, they look much like a wet limp eye contact. The strip pits are all nearly as clear as the lakes in the Quetico. A favorite haunt for local scuba divers.
