This doesn't answer your question, but I think you'll like the Abyss boots.  I typically wear them with Merino Wools socks and have never found them uncomfortable.  To me they provide the perfect combination of ankle support and drainage.  Early Spring/late fall trips (which I haven't done) are a different story though.  I also wonder how the Abyss would fit and work with wet socks.
