Title: Iceboating
Post by Snow_Dog on Jan 15th, 2013 at 10:42pm
Anybody ever done this?

These guys have been out on my lake a few times already this winter.  Saw them out again this afternoon and I could not resist any longer.  I bundled up and crossed the lake to find out a little bit more about it.

5 minutes after saying hello and meeting the guys, I was piloting an iceboat solo!

Basically it's a sailboat mounted onto ice skates.  But with no hull in water to slow it down, it moves just a tiny bit faster than a sailboat.  Like about 50+ MPH today and it was not even all that windy!

It is a crazy good time.  If you ever get the chance, give it a try!

Now there is another toy on my list of things I "need", lol!

SD,
I never tried that but always thought it would be a thrill and would do it given the opportunity.

I did try something similar but I wasn't athletic enough to pull it off for very long.
It's basically a wind sailor with skates attached.
I got up and going like hell, but couldn't turn so I dropped sail and crashed and burned ;D
Still the speed and sound was a real adrenaline rush for sure 8-)

S_D The acceleration in a Hobie Cat is fast but I'll bet it's even faster in an ice boat.  8-)

Definitely addictive.  My next day off is Saturday and I'm REALLY hoping they are out there sailing again so I can join them!

Looks great for those winter canoe trips. One can really put on the miles... ;)
