I'm planning my first trip into WCPP and intend to enter the park through the Leano lake access point in mid-to-late May. I have heard that the road requires high clearance vehicles to pass. I have an suv with good 4w drive and am trying to figure out if I can drive to the access on my own or if I need to be booking a shuttle from an outfitter. If anyone's driven that road recently and can provide their thoughts on the ruggedness of the road it would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Carpkiller, what type of SUV are you driving? While we'll have to wait for the spring to see what condition the road is in, high clearance full size trucks are recommended if going in on your own. Not sure if spoke before but our vehicles have been raised 4" to deal with the deteriorating road conditions.

Thanks Harlan. I think I'll play it safe and go the shuttle route. Wouldn't want to have a mishap before even entering the park. Would prefer to keep with tradition and have all my mishaps happen while in the park. :)

The shuttle is the way to go especially in May!!

FYI..If you get stuck on that road you are in deep poop!! Just getting towed out will cost you several time more than the shuttle.

And the time with Harlan going in is priceless. You can ask those questions you forgot til then and just get more of the scoop. I suppose Carpkiller is in by now?

i have just come back from 6 days of trail clearing working out from Leano. The road, as expected was not in the greatest shape with 2 nasty spots past Onnie Lake. The approach to Onnie is soft (sand base).
