I saw this weasel in the middle of Jean. It had a smallmouth bass in it's mouth.

Technically these are part of the weasel family...but these "weasels" are MINK.

The weasels in my photo are not mink. I'm fairly sure they are least weasels. Quite small, like long skinny mice, tiny faces, not very good swimmers, more dog paddle than anything else- not the grace and comfort in the water of minks.

I know very little about weasels but am familiar with mink to some degree......curious, I have only observed mink solo........do they run in a group like the pic in question? I honestly don't know........

I am sure weasels can swim but have not experienced seeing them do that.  I think Solus' photo is a small mother mink and her kits following her.

The animals in the picture are about 4-6" long. The mother (not in this group but with a straggler behind this cluster) was within this size range. They had very sharp pointed faces and white bellies. They are not minks. They may be short-tailed weasels (Ermine), not easy to discriminate between short-tailed and least whilst in the drink.

Well, I am amazed.  It is a poor day when you don't see or learn something new.  I have to believe you are right, Solus, as I am convinced you are a consummate woodsman; considering some of the great photos you have gotten and some of the adventures you've had (April 2012).   :)

:-/Well, the untold story  and the action shot not taken that followed this photo (and revealed the white bellies) brings to question my woods acumen. I pulled the camera down to see how close I was when they all turned screaming and hissing swarmed the canoe, including the two in the rear (that I was not aware of at that point) that attempted a flanking action. I did not know if they were capable of boarding, but they seemed intent on attempting it at the very least. I am not fluent in weasel but fairly certain they were telling me they were "going to rip my flesh". I swirled one away with my paddle and fled the scene.

Phantom Jug,

The location of today's POD is on a beautiful island campsite at the very north end of North Bay of Basswood in the Quetico.

Looks like we need to provide some PODs. Attached is Quetico Agnes end of September 2004.
