Title: Hydrogen Fuel Cells? Post by DentonDoc on Aug 7th, 2013 at 6:21pm
Yep. That's right!
For those of us gear geeks that need a way to charge devices, you are about to see an "explosion" in portable power source market. That's right ... a hydrogen fuel cell for camping. (You need to Login or Register is one name currently in this market segment, but its about to be joined by another, more familiar name to those that are backcountry travelers ... Brunton. New product lines were just announced so hold on to your hats (and electrical devices). The new devices will have real "juice" for power. Anyone in for a depth finder powered by a fuel cell? ;-) dd |

Some day, that "where do I plug-in my blow dryer" joke I heard on my first trip will have a serious answer!
Luddite here calling DD or anyone, assuming that they make AA USB chargers, do they work at all? Do they eat batteries or is there enough left over for a depth finder? The reason I ask is my kid's iTouch does sound and video better than my other options, she's lost interest in it and her phone wouldn't do me any good anyway. Plus it's small and light and something deep inside me wants to ask Siri where am I, how do I get to whatever portage/lake...? Sorry about that. ;) |

I did a Philmont trek this summer and the other adult carried his I-phone and a solar charger and - while I probably would not have if it were up tome - the gps data was helpful on a couple of occasions and fun to know elevation going up Baldy. The panel just hung from his back pack and worked fine. Would arrange to face sun while stopped for any significant length of time. Used it to charge the Garmin "wrist gps" - which was quite fun if not essential.

Actually, I have a foldable solar panel that will run my depth finder. I've not used it for a trip in favor of an 8-pack of lithium AA's because of convenience. If I ever decide to go back to rechargable batts, the solar panel will be making the trip and it can connect to any device that has a USB or cigarette-lighter type connector. I've even put together an alligator clip connector if the others won't attach (but its not as water-resistant as the others. dd |
