Title: Lesson #3 Post by mastertangler on Sep 22nd, 2013 at 12:48pm
#3 Make a friend for life.....
After about the fourth day of a rigorous trip, suddenly and unexpectedly produce a Hershey chocolate bar and hold it out to your canoeing partner. The response is quite profound, mesmerizing to the recipient. Time seems to stand still while your breath is suddenly halted, your heart rate increases and your eyes widen as they focus on the glimmering wrapper. It gives new meaning to the term "shock and awe" ;) |

Never made a friend with chocolate (although I think my wife has. . . ) but I have made plenty by sharing the jug. To each his own I guess. :-/

MT
Your last trip partner handed me a beer one time. Much better than a candy bar. |

Please Darrel, tell me MT isn't referring to moment you two shared on a recent trip. I refuse to believe this took place between the two of you.

Don't like my humor PJ? How about this........bring what ever nutritional supplement that floats your boat. After bustin our tails for 4 days that chocolate bar really hit the spot and from now on I will sneak a few treats along to share with who ever I'm with. You know what? You win. I was going to present some other items that could of provided a little something to chew on but why subject myself to PJ and his scathing commentary? |

Whoa, nice hat Magic! :thumbup
FWIW - I came home with 5 Hershey bars. I took 6. Kid saw the leftovers in a bag and asked if I wanted to split one (our usual agreement). I said no, go for it. A few minutes later she comes back asking what's wrong with the 'em and here you go. (it was way more than half) Parts were still melted and other parts were like Styrofoam. :-? The almonds were still pleasing however. After my first disappointment, I ate the PF Brussels I added as a last minute whim for desert. Candy is heavy but it makes me smile way more up there than here. You can't screw up Scittles or red licorice. Even the one pretzel stick I came home with tasted like a Zip-Loc bag. |

ha! we used to take bags of skittles. the year we swamped, my little brother thought hed save space and poke a pinhole in the bag. he sealed it with scotch tape. after the 1 and 1/2 hour subsurface adventure, the entire bag was a slimy gooey glob of deliciousness.
i usually try to sneak in some special treat or meal for the group. the day i figure out how to pack in cheese for the 2nd to last day for an over the fire pizza, im totally doing it |

Buy some of those little Baby Bell cheeses sealed in wax. Figure out how many you need for pizza(s). Get a little mini-grater from a gourmet packer site. Vacuum bag your portion size. Store in center of food sack. Get's real hot, put cheese bag in canvas bag. Wet and put back in food pack. You want the wet bag to be able to dry/evaporate/cool. I think unless it's brutally hot, you would be okay. |

Ah, probably because you have quite a bit more history together. I am not at beer level status. |

OK, I'll be the party pooper. I understand that you love beer, but the beer is in a glass bottle and the rules for good reasons prohibits bringing in a glass bottle. I can think of several bad things that can happen to a glass bottle of beer. In view of all the down sides, I don't think bringing in a glass bottle passes the cost benefit test. I don't think I am the only one with this thought. If the bottle is plastic, I will retract my observation. As far as chocolate is concerned, my experience is that chocolate melts and becomes a big mess.

I've been watching the Pat's Backcountry Beverage site for years waiting for the beer. Based on the site it seems it still hasn't happened yet. Do you know something I don't know, ST?

Ww...it might be glass, but up here in BWCAW country you can also buy it in plastic bottles which look just like the glass ones :D

I have too Kerry, but it seems to be fairly current and it appears that there is some on-going activity. :-/ I'm guessing that whatever process you need to get a consumable product thru the appropriate regulatory channels is slow and costly. They don't solicit financial support, so if it's a scam, I don't see why it would be worth the effort? |

I know, shoot.......sorry, having a bad day that day.
So maybe its me that doesn't get your humor? Was that meant to be humorous? Here lets try again....... Yes PJ you missed a tender moment.......wish you could of been there (of course you would of probably dipped your chocolate bar into the infamous jug to sweeten it a bit?) Hows that? A bit more palatable? |

I think it was meant to be humorous. I was kind of thinking along the same lines.
Before you post, reread with your bromance filter turned on high. But please keep sharing. 8-) |

Very astute observation or guess DD. It was a highly unanticipated and appreciatted surprise to be handed one! Tasted great after a long day of travel. (Yes, in a plastic bottle, one of which became a fuel storage bottle).
Is it just me, or are some people taking posts perhaps a bit to seriously ? |
