This area was added to the park to preserve the historical portage used by the fur trade route from Lake Windigoostigwan to French Lake. BTW, right across the highway from this little rectangular section is the beginning of a trapper's trail that leads down to the falls on the French River and eventually crosses Baptism Creek at Site 111 (the location of a former logging camp in the late 1960s). I was snowshoeing in this area last winter; it's quite pretty.
