Title: Midwest Mountaineering Outdoor Adv Expo Post by old_salt on Mar 15th, 2014 at 6:25pm
I'm probably going to be there on Saturday, April 26. If other QJers will be there, I would look forward to gathering for lunch and/or dinner. If someone in the cities wants to organize something, that would be great.
Thanks. 8-) |

It sounds like fun. I should be able to make it and would be up for a dinner get together of the QJ.

I can't make it this weekend, but I will divulge some ml trivia and tell you I lived in Dinkytown when I went to the U of M back in 1977 - 79.
I may have to think about coming next year to explore some old haunts up there ::) |

Old Salt, I'm in for dinner at Baldy's at 6:30. It might just be the two of us. Almost like a blind date. Perhaps, I should give you a call or email on Friday.

Title: Re: Midwest Mountaineering Outdoor Adv Expo Post by old_salt on Apr 24th, 2014 at 12:19am
Westwood,
Doc says my vision is good. So I'm not a blind date, just a cheap one. Dinner count is two. Anyone else? OK to come at last minute as we don't have enough to make a reservation. If you let me know, we'll know how many to request a table for. 8-) |

Title: Re: Midwest Mountaineering Outdoor Adv Expo Post by old_salt on Apr 27th, 2014 at 2:45am
To Westwood and anyone else who may have gone to Baldy's, please accept my apology for not being there. Next year we'll have to find a better place to do a Saturday dinner.

Title: Old Salt Presents Alaska at Fall Expo Post by old_salt on Jul 14th, 2014 at 8:30pm
Hi all,
It probably feels a little early to bring this up, but want to invite all my QJ friends to attend. If it works out, we could probably make lunch/dinner plans, depending on schedule, which will be announced about October 15. Old Salt will be presenting two programs at the Fall Expo, November 21-23. Both are about travel to Alaska. 'Alaska on the Cheap' has lots of money saving tips for traveling to and around Alaska. 'Alaska's Kenai Peninsula Salmon Fishing' will prepare you to enjoy some of the greatest fishing on the planet. Mark your calendars and plan now to be in Minneapolis this November. Perhaps I'll see you next year in Alaska. If Alaska is not on your bucket list, it should be. 8-) Rachel___Wes_Patterson_wedding_012.JPG ( 172 KB | 0

OS has that wild eyed look of someone who's lost in the moment. ;D
Either that or he's been dabbling in some of that Alaskan Bud they talk about. ;) :-X |

Alaska has some very liberal limits when the salmon are running. On that day I caught three stringers of reds that size. All were legal and delicious. We estimated about 175 lbs of reds. 8-) |

Thanks Lynda, I appreciate your support. For those who may attend, this may be the first 'Winter' expo.
I welcome the opportunity to meet with fellow QJers. I will wear an orange fishing shirt, a fishing vest, and an Alaska cap. I will do lunch about 1pm at Famous Dave's at the venue. If I know you will be there, I'll look for you. I'm excited about sharing Alaska. 8-) |

Thought I would give a trip report on yesterdays event. The drive to Mpls was foggy and uneventful. The return drive was also foggy and uneventful.
But, I had a great time. My first presentation on Alaska salmon fishing was head to head with Paul Schurke and Dan Cooke. My expectations were low. The room had a capacity of 72. About 50 showed up. They were enthusiastic and all stayed to the end. The Q&A was interpersed throughout and I enjoyed the exchange. Alaska on the Cheap went beyond my wildest dreams. I showed up about 45 minutes prior to start time. I found several people lined up waiting to get in. They recognized me and we talked Alaska. The prior conference ended early so I went in to set up. The room was already half full as many stayed to see me. The room was packed full 15 minutes prior to start time. So I decided to do some Q&A while waiting to start. Very energized crowd. Estimate over 125. After the presentation I offered more time for Q&A. Almost 45 minutes later the last ones left. Fortunately, it was last on schedule so no one was trying to get in for another presentation. I have never seen that response anywhere. It was fantastic. I never saw MuleLars, but I'm not sure he could have gotten in. Perhaps I'll offer it again in April. Time will tell. Update soon on Copia plans. 8-) |

Sounds like fun! It's always better to be outside than to be talking about it! My favorite quote of Ed Abbey: Quote:

More public land in Alaska than any state in US, but that's beside the point. 8-)

Title: Re: Midwest Mountaineering Outdoor Adv Expo Post by Puckster on Feb 8th, 2015 at 1:16am
Yeah, for sure. I think it's the lower 48 I was talking about.

|
Title: Re: Midwest Mountaineering Outdoor Adv Expo Post by Puckster on Feb 8th, 2015 at 1:32am
Actually, upon a little research I was wrong again. I think Nevada has the most federal land in the lower 48. Then I thought maybe I was thinking about national park land: wrong again. California and Alaska, followed by Utah and Colorado?
No matter, Utah has GREAT country. I'm going to stand down now. :P puckster |
