Title: QJ names Post by prouboy on Apr 3rd, 2014 at 6:09am
When I signed onto QuietJourney years back, I gave little thought to the "handle" I'd use. I've regretted it ever since! But I've enjoyed the creativity of the names of other QJrs.
One of my favorites is Wenonah Rider. Great play on words. Anyone else got any favorites? Okay, it's late and I can't sleep. Good Lord. prouboy |

My first board name was MrDB until I realized that it may cause some conflict and confusion. I changed it within a week or so and glad I did.
Actually our identical initials still do cause confusion occasionally. He gets questions and requests for advice about fishing, I get high praise for how well I run this board haha. |

I had just got a new solo canoe that I loved so MagicLover was the perfect name. So how did magic Johnson get his name? :)

My husband was the one who got me interested in canoeing websites, first QJ and then BWCA.com. Mainly because of the photography. Because we are Spartans and a tandem pair (having met initially on the MSU Student Rose Bowl Tour in 1965, being MSU graduates, and having been married since 1967), it just seemed natural that we would be Spartan1 and Spartan2. It's a teamwork thing. ;)

Title: Re: QJ names Post by Jimbo on Apr 3rd, 2014 at 3:16pm
Hmmm... I was in such a rush to get involved & start posting to certain threads that I picked the first simple-minded handle I could think of.
While there have been times I wished I had been a little more creative, my chosen appellation seems to get the job done. C'est la vie, mes amis. Jimbo 8-) |

Title: Re: QJ names Post by zski on Apr 3rd, 2014 at 3:23pm
Exactly the same scheme as BillConnor; minus the first name, and displaying only first character and last three characters of last name with 24 characters from the center of last name truncated out for simplicity

my buddies in the UP called me Jimmer, my wife's name is Marcie so... although she is not a member here and seldom accompanies me on trips. It was a carryover from our shared email address. kinda boring, eh?

"Denton" ... the town I live in (until next week) ... I'll be keeping the original town name.
"Doc" ... professional designation Actually, I picked this is a ebay user ID years before I started using it as a "handle." dd |

Title: Re: QJ names Post by Mk631 on Apr 3rd, 2014 at 6:21pm
At one point I kept a list to try and cross reference names with handles, mostly to see who was posting photos (since those often have real names, not handles). Since most didn't correlate much with real names, I guess we're 'creative'.
Personally I dont' like mine so much and I've thought about changing it, but that would just be confusing. I like the way we tend to abbreviate our handles too! Like KF, MP, PJ. Maybe we should all have 2 initial handles. :) -mk (Tom) |

Title: Re: QJ names Post by Kerry on Apr 3rd, 2014 at 7:14pm
I chose this handle to protect my true identity. I am a crime fighter by night. But now it can be told, by real name is Kerrry with 3 r's. Please keep this to yourselves as I don't want to endanger my loved ones.

ST,
BS would have been good! And I realize I forgot so many other 2 letter abbreviations like: ST, OS, DD, MT, SD, MM, IC, S1 & S2, YB, QP, TTC (oops 3!), etc... :) -Tom |

Title: Re: QJ names Post by Jon on Apr 3rd, 2014 at 9:37pm
When I first discovered this site I was a little mystified as to why everyone used made up names. It seemed juvenile to me and I thought I'll show them how stupid that is, I'll just use my real first name. So I did and now I realize it was a opportunity to come up with something fun and maybe clever too, and I missed the opportunity. Then MT revealed my last name and now I'm like the one guy at the party with no clothes on but I am OK with that as I have nothing to hide.

Correction, I am not the only guy at the party with no clothes on as zski pointed out. Emperor Bill is flaunting his uncloaked persona.

mine is from my favorite movie mixed with me. Gladiator is far and away my favorite movie, and my name is jack, so Jaximus Maximus has been my handle for video games and forums since as long as i remember.

I really didn't mind MT. The whole "invisibility cloak" thing on social websites mystifies me. My wife is very suspicious when she hears the loon go off. She thinks we must be up to something sneaky here. She has calmed down lately but since I had never been interested in FB etc when I discovered QJ and BWCA.com she was always looking over my shoulder. Maybe on some websites an invisibility cloak is needed but it seems unnecessary here.

Title: Re: QJ names Post by portage dog on Apr 3rd, 2014 at 10:38pm
In sticking with PB's original question, there are a lot of neat, zany, fun handles here - not just the regular players, but scanning the members list you get the spectrum for sure. There are also a good few more 'naked' folks on the list too.
I'll second the vote for Wenonah Rider and add Mastertangler, Phantom Jug, and Wildernesswendy as all pretty cool. Some say a handle should be 'earned' on the trail and many are so, not always in a flattering manner though. My younger sister bestowed mine upon me on an '09 Q trip we did with our boys. Apparently impressed with my portage skill, even after wrenching an ankle on a particularly slippery one the third day into a 10 day trip. :-/ Admittedly, I did modify it slightly as a precautionary move to avoid a potential lightning stike. :o Portages do tend to be some beautiful parts of the park, offer a break from paddling, and provide a much closer experience with the surroundings. pd |

Title: Re: QJ names Post by Gavia on Apr 4th, 2014 at 12:40am
Gavia is the genus name for loons. It seems to fit me nicely. Plus I like the avatar of a loon dancing on the water.
I've been Koda on other lists. It's the Lakota Sioux word for "friend" and, despite my good intentions, somehow I manage to elicit decidedly unfriendly reactions. So maybe it doesn't fit. Gavia definitely does! |

Title: Re: QJ names Post by db on Apr 4th, 2014 at 7:29am
The way the board's scripts work, anyone can change their screen name at any time and past posts will reflect that change. Names on your past posts and your name when quoted using the board would change seamlessly. Any references to old names you someone typed in would not.
Names may sometimes help us understand where someone is coming from but how the stuff they say resonates to anyone at that moment is really all that matters. So, if a new screen name helps anyone somehow, I say feel free. Ummm, as long as you're in your profile, ~10 years ago hacked the board and changed the M/F switch to 'mostly paddles' Q/BW. After a couple of updates I no longer cared where people paddled and allowed it to revert to M/F. Just sayn' |

Nothing very creative for me. I live on Westwood Road. Plus, I like the name Westwood. I should have done as Spartan 1 and 2 and called myself Badger. Go Bucky.

Title: Re: QJ names Post by PhantomJug on Apr 5th, 2014 at 1:27am
Phantomjug was given to me after my 1st trip to Quetico in 1992. (I could share that story if anyone's interested). Funny story from a few years back though. After a week in the park with my boys and some cabin time, we usually hit up PJ's pizza in Atikokan. While enjoying my pie, I overheard a conversation from the table behind me . . . "Hey dad. Do you think the phantomjug owns this place?" I just smiled and enjoyed my dinner afraid to turn around. Kids got a good laugh too.
On the old forum I think I used 5-6 different names. |

Well my handle is because of my astronomy hobby; stargazer was already taken by someone. My canoeing buddies take me along instead of a star chart in case anyone wants to know where the corona borealis is, or the names of other constellations.

Title: Re: QJ names Post by Wind-In-Face on Apr 6th, 2014 at 2:07pm
Been gone awhile, and this topic caught my eye. In retrospect I always thought my name on QJ was pretty corny. I set it up shortly after my most recent trip, in which the wind seemed to be constantly in my face regardless of which direction I was headed.
I've always liked Magic Paddler. (love mine, too) Wind-in-Face aka Rocks-in-Head, Butt-in-Sling |

Puckster….one of my trip partners who happened to be behind me on some portages one yr suggested Trailwind as a name. He also suggested Whence-Cometh-the-Wind. They just didn't appreciate talent… ;D
When I get some time I might change my handle here to MagicLover, as suggested. Good to be back... |
