Title: Lakers in Kawnipi?
Post by old_salt on May 23rd, 2014 at 9:18pm
Stu lists Kawnipi as one of his better laker lakes. I've never caught one there, nor have I ever heard of one caught there. I'm wondering if anyone here has ever caught a laker on Kawnipi? If so, what part of the lake were you on? Thanks.

Two times (different years) when I was crossing the section where the portage is into Montgomery I have marked fish in deep water that I thought were Lakers. Both times I tried to catch one with no luck. It was near the big island that sticks out into the body of water from across the lake from the portage.

I have heard of a couple of lakers caught on Kawnipi via vertical jigging a spoon at a steep drop off.  Not sure exactly where.  Close friends whom I trust, not just a fishy tale.

Gonna make a go of it mid June.  Looking for the Quetico Slam and I'll report back after our trip.  My brother read that there are lakers in Kawnipi.  We'll have to look for the deeper portions of Kawnipi and run some keel sinkers with spoons and HJ 13's.
