Anyone have any favorite no-cook, or just add water, quick breakfast ideas? Other than instant oatmeal, of course.

Jim j solo has it exactly right. Mountain house blueberry granola with milk is one of my all time favorites. Good calorie count, keeps you going. In my backpacking days this was my staple for lunch, everyday. Add plenty of water to help keep you hydrated this meal is the bomb. If you get the pre packaged foil pouches use a longer spoon to get to the bottom.......I like being near water so you can rinse out the foil package.......then I liked using teeny tiny cable ties to keep the pouch folded tightly and in a zip lock bag......have to be mindful of odors and uninvited guests.

If I had to do it over again........I would purchase the #10 tins and transfer the contents into the nalgene wide mouth water canteens which make the ultimate food storage containers (3 different sizes- the large size holds 14 days worth of 1 cup of oats per day in a tough easy to store and use container).

My thermos holds enough water for two cups of coffee, a pack of oatmeal and still dribbles enough to rinse the bowl and spoon.

The last few years I've been taking granola bars with nearly the exact same nutritional label as Quaker for variety or mornings I didn't want to fuss with a bowl. But I recently noticed mini slimjim's in the fridge last week. Those will be an addition this year as it's my kind of Space Food stick!

They are a little fatter than candy cigarettes. Near Space Food stick size would be ideal IMO.

Gorp works anytime cold fried fish in a pinch…. One or two of my planned pancake breakfasts end up being lunch sometimes or more likely an appetizer for a fish dinner.

The first morning is usually hard boiled eggs and yogurt these days unless it's raining or something.

We take refrigeration and dates way too seriously IMO. Cheese, sausage, bacon, eggs, yogurt, and steak are like the little gifts that keep on giving.

I eat cold cereal everyday the rest of the year so when I found Nido, I started eating cold cereal on treks. I like grape nuts with some craisans and almonds. Shoulder seasons I mix nido at night and plenty cool by morning, mix in a gsi fair share mug and just add cereal.

I did for a few months once. I found it just wasn't me. I'll even pick up a few Cubans just after I cross the border these days. Too much DEET and Permethrin can't be good for anyone either. ;)

Most of my trail breakfasts are granola with dried blueberries, currants, and any berries I can find in the wild.  Added to that is a mix of 1/2 Carnation instant nonfat dry milk and 1/2 Nido (powdered whole milk), which yields 2%.  Because the Nido is slow to dissolve, I mix it up ahead of time as Bill Conner does, and by morning it's ready.

Outdoor Herbivore has a few nice quick breakfasts, too.
There's AppalaChia   (You need to Login or Register

and High Elevation Rice Cereal   (You need to Login or Register

If it's chilly and I have a little extra time I heat the milk for a wonderfully warm start to the day.

Nido is slow to dissolve? You mix it ahead of time? Bringing it for the first time on this trip. How slow could it be?

I'm making hot chocolate with it (the packets say add milk.....probably pretty good stuff)......maybe it will dissolve faster with boiling water.

Another tip from QJ folk......Nido, who knew?

Well, I liked it cooled which works well in September overnights. I suppose the Nido does not mix as easily as some things is why I always use the GSI fair share mug and shake the bejesus out of it.

An easy, no cook breakfast, is bagels with cream cheese or peanut butter.

Coffee and bagels work fine.  But if you have a bit of time and energy, you can heat your frying pan, and not add any grease, and the bagels will toast up nicely.

I also bring along precooked bacon.  Topping bagels/cream cheese with bacon adds some zest!

We eat this meal on days we're breaking camp early and/or want to be on the water quickly.

Carnation Instant Breakfast - which is called Breakfast Essentials now.

Depending on volume - for one serving;using premeasured Nido in a baggy sandwich bag - take a sandwich sized ziplock bag - add your cup of water, then pour in the Nido - seal and shake vigorously; carefully open and add the instant breakfast - shake vigouously (best if you roll down the top a turn or two to prevent any leakage out of the seal - occasionally a drop or two will leak out of the corners of the seal.  You can squeeze the bag between your fingers if you find any lumps, to mush up the lump - then pour into your cup.   Along with the instant breakfast, I will have a "granola bar" of some sort - usually one of the nutrition bars of whatever variety, or some sort of packaged "cookie" like a Little Debby cinnamon streusel, or blueberry muffin.

I have never had any issues with the nido not mixing using the shake the bag method.

Instead of mixing non-fat plus nido to get 2%, why not just buy Milkman which is 2% - it was off the market for a number of years, but is back in production mow.  I haven't seen it in the grocery store, but REI sells it - $3 per quart pouch is expensive though - likely could buy it online somewhere for a lot less.

Nido is easiest found at Walmart, in the Mexican Food section.  Maybe at a Whole Foods type of store also.

I also use the Nido/Milkman to mix up INSTANT pudding - same methodology, just shale the pudding mix for a minute or two, then put the ziplock into a second ziplock to keep lake water off, tie a string to the bag and toss into the lake - sets up nicely.

for solo trips, I do a half package of pudding with one cup of milk - adjust as needed for group size.

I tried these on my spring trip. Ate a variety of them every travel day. Set some water to boil while breaking camp and hit water with travel mug of coffee and these.

I just nibbled as a moved and found them delicious/convenient and most importantly they taste good and give you plenty of energy.

Can't get much more convenient/fast than that.

Home made trail mix, (which is mostly cashews, almonds and raisins), some type of breakfast/granola bar, and a snack size box of raisins.

Yukon Jack? I heard he paddled over some falls.....

I have always admired Yukon Cornelius myself, isn't he from Copenhagen?

I think we have it all wrong. ;)
What PJ REALLY means is if you drink enough
Yukon Jack, you THINK your in Copenhagen and start posing for pics like his infamous "Merman" pic. :o ;D ;D
Obviously a shout-out to the famous "Little Mermaid", but with a UpNorth sensibility. :P

I'm calling your bull*&^% on this one . . .   If the topic was no cook brunch ideas, I might have believed it.

Just to get things back on a realistic track  ;)

BelVita crackers (I prefer the oat flavor, but chocolate would perhaps be OK) with peanut butter, or almond butter.  I usually have these for lunch, but if we were having cold breakfast, they would be my first choice.  We take the individual packets of nut butter from Packit Gourmet, so we always have a several flavors along.  (peanut butter plain, or peanut butter with honey, or with chocolate;  almond butter plain or with honey, hazelnut butter, etc.)

By the time I wake up, it's probably closer to lunch time anyway AND, I don't have to leave the tent.  You guys work way too hard for your meals.

Anyway, the trip last week included 2 boxes of strawberry pop-tarts.  Kids enjoyed starting a fire and roasting them.
