FWIW, I think the real issue here is more existential than base camp v. travel camp and it is certainly no mid-life crisis (whatever that means).  But, everybody hates advice - even when they ask for it - but here's mine FWIW.

Expectations are only planned disappointments.

Once I gave up on the rigorous trip planning, pouring over maps for months, preparing gear, and having expectations of myself, my friends, my family, water temps, campsite ratings, moon phase, fishing, etc.... did I start enjoying my trips.  Once I let the moment take care of itself and simply did the next thing did I cross the threshold.  It drove Pascanel nuts for a while but he eventually came around on his own.
