To expand on db's comment. If the outer layer doesn't bead and gets saturated it won't breathe either, so neither will the waterproof membrane underneath. The treatments you do are retreating the outer shell, cleaning and water proofing. Dryer heat will reactivate the factory water proofing sometimes and restore it's original condition.
