If  plans play out well I will be taking a solo trip this September.  Having checked the condition of my heavily aged 2 man Timberline it looks like I need to re-invest.  Looking through current options, the layout and weight of the newer MSR Hubba Hubba NX caught my attention.  I searched the archives and found many references to the  older  models, but nothing for the new NX version.  Other than the price being painful, does anyone have pro’s or con’s to offer?

looked it up - if it is the solo version, I'd think it might be too low for comfort at only 36" peak height - and like most all solo tents, it only has one door - to me, having 2 doors in a tent is nearly critical, in case one zipper blows out (you can always duct tape the bad one closed and use the other door)

the two person tent looks nice - I compared it to REI quarter dome - NX is slightly heavier, slightly more room and $100 bucks more  - might or might not be worth the extra $100 to you

I was considering the 2 man even though it is primarily for solo use.  I have several generations of the basic Timberline and typically have been underwhelmed with the so called improvements over the years.  My only departure was with a 4 man Timberline SQ which boasts a couple of the same features as the Hubba NX.  The SQ is a bit more fiddly to erect and improvements seem minor.  Maybe I am just stuck in the past with what I am most familiar with?

I did notice many of the posts on REI are for the older Hubba Hubba and not the newer NX model.  At least they were mostly positive.

I bought a Big Agnes Copper Spur UL2 a couple of years ago on sale at Backcountry.com. They offer a solo version UL1 but I opted for the two person as it fits me very comfortably when I solo and it doesn't weigh much more than the solo version.

It has 2 doors with vestibules, DAC poles, mesh walls, reflective guy lines, 42 inch height, 3 lbs. 2 oz. and I like the orange Terra Cotta/silver color scheme. I bought the lightweight footprint that attaches to outer floor.

I see it on sale from time to time. May want to give it a look.

I have the MSR Elixir 3 man. Great tent, very comfortable for 2 people.  Very well made.  Comes with a footprint.  Nice feature. Can be set up with just the fly and footprint if you so choose.

I have a fondness for MSR products and have a lot of them including my Mutha Hubba 3 person, 3 season tent.  And it is a great tent - durable, easy to set up, great in wind and rain and fairly light weight.  However, mine is not the NX, which is a very different tent.  Everything I hear about the NX, though, is positive except that there are not enough places to stake it and some questions about durability. 
That being said, there are so many quality tents to choose from these days.  Two that keep showing up on all the "best of" lists are the Hilleberg Anjan 3 and the Big Agnes Copper Spur UL3.  If I had the money I'd choose the Hilleberg for quality of construction and design - but they are pricey.  The Big Agnes comes in at a more reasonable price and has a very good reputation.  Google "Best 3 person tents 2016" and you can see what others are saying.

I like my copper spur. I had it replaced last year and the new one is even lighter. The msr hubba hubba has the D door which I'd like better. But the copper spur door s seem OK.

Well,  It looks like this one has about run its course.  I appreciate everyone's input.  The opinions here and on the various internet ratings have the Hubba NX and Copper Spur running a close race with the copper spur having a slight edge in fans.  I have both Big Agnes and MSR gear and have no complaints with either.  I also received a couple of PM's with alternative suggestions and will be looking into those as well.

In looking at the details, one thing I really think is important is it has two door with vestibules and with at leats a small awning over the doors.  This allows options for keeping things open yet still dry under most rain conditions.

The one things I do not like, but this is common to every tent I have seen, the fly stops a few inches above the ground.  All that water running off the fly will (depending on wind) drip or spalsh on the bottom of the tent body. If one has one's sleeping bag touching that tent body on the inside, it will tend to wick water in (if not right away, it will as the tent ages). make the fly just a few inches longer, and the tent body stays dry.

Just to enter the fray ... the best tent IMO is the Sierra Designs Zeta 2 (and its big brother the Zeta 3).  I have one of each.  They have two doors and two vestibules, one of which is big enough to crouch down in, adequate height, full-length fly, 6-1/2 lbs for the 2-man.
