How about something like this treated in Permethrin to keep those ankle biters off you? I know they make all cotton/canvas ones too. Pair of socks treated and these would seem like they would do the trick?

Of course THEN the little devils might develop a taste for those meaty calfs portagers are prone to have.  ;) ;D :'(
