Title: Re: MSR Windboiler and Windburner Post by portage dog on May 9th, 2016 at 11:34pm
Mossback,
I have zero experience with the Jetboil (other than watching a few boil over) and inexplicably have a disdainful opinion of them.....I think it might be the name. I do have a soft spot for MSR (and perhaps the reason for the mal-impression of aforementioned device...) and their website does not mention or return anything on a search for Windboiler, so I expect it is the same thing and I suspect that it was coined by some goof at Jetboil, irritated that they copied the Jetboil. Either name sounds just as bad. I tend to stay away from stoves with rather limited use as I tend to cook meals rather than heat-n-eat - just my preference. Now that that was probably less than no use at all, I will say I do have a MSR Reactor (purchased used....they are bit spendy). It has the same technology as the breezeboiler (or whatever it is) in the flame head and no, it will not light with a piezo either. It does do much better in wind conditions and is very efficient on fuel. Heat transfer from the head to the special heat exchanger pot base is really super. What is does not do well is simmer, though. If you turn it down that low, fuel pressure/supply is insufficient and it just goes out. For that reason and that type of low cooking, I like my MSR WindPro. (not a great name either, come to think of it...) It's remote canister and low profile base make it my go to stove. That Reactor is great for deep frying walleye nuggets though! I hope there is something useful in all that. pd |
