I am a new member of Quiet Journey.  I am happy to "commune" with you all on these pages. I am currently prepping for a 12 day solo journey into Quetico in September.  Old Town Pack 12.  130 lbs total gear including 36lb canoe weight.  Stove:  Pocket Rocket with IsoPro fuel canisters (two large).  I will be double portaging, needless to say.  I am 62 years old now, but in good enough shape.  I have been into Quetico 6 previous times including one previous solo for 12 days (but my planning was poor on that solo--too much food and gear!)  I learned a lot the hard way.  My first solo took me up the Falls Chain, this one will begin at Prairie Portage to the Sarah Lake entry into the Brent Lake general area.  I can hardly wait.  BTW--can you go either direction on the Darky River between DArky Lake and Minn Lake?  Any way, glad to be on this forum and I will be checking out all of the posts to fine tune preparation!  Kurt

It looks like you have a great trip plan. It is always good to have options in case you decide to adjust your plans. As for the Darky river question, one can go both ways, but it is much more enjoyable to go with the flow from Darky to Minn. 8-)

I traversed Minn to Darkwater (which is the upstream direction) in June traveling solo.  I did need to line a couple of spots, but was (for me) a relatively easy traverse (at age 69).  We did meet several groups headed down stream the day we did the traverse.

Thank you for the responses!  I am a vegetarian, therefore "veggykurt".  I personally don't identify as a carrot, broccoli, etc.  My plan is to go from Darkwater to Minn, therefore the flow is going in the right direction.  Good to know you can go either way, though.  By all means call me vk, and, yes, I will read trip reports and posts.  I hope to give a decent trip report, too.  I have never done one before and it should really be fun doing it.  TX all

The portages from Brent to Darkwater are "interesting" you can read about them in the Portage Data Base (PDA).

Greetings,  If you have a layover day available you might want to linger at Brent.  I have been through there several times and have always enjoyed Brent.  If you are camped on the larger bay East, it is a short portage into Conmee.  Makes a nice day trip.

Ditto to what Mossback says.  You can't go far wrong on Brent!  Lots of great options for exploring, fishing & camping.

Do vegetarians fish when in the Q?

There is nothing inconsistent with a vegetarian fishing.  The problem would arise if the fish died or if the vegetarian wanted to eat the fish.  In other words to be consistent a vegetarian would have to practice catch and release and only use artificial lures.

They would also have to fish the Veggie lakes in the bw. ;)
