Title: Wally 13 & Old Salt's Trip Post by Old Salt on Apr 7th, 2017 at 1:58am
It's always fun to connect with QJ folks, especially on a canoe trip. If your travels take you near us, post and we'll keep an eye and a light on for you. We are entering at Stanton bay on June 29 and planning to meet Jimbo on first night then heading via Deax Rivière to Antoine. Or we may meet Jimbo on Antoine. After a couple of nights there, we will head to the Sturgeon sandspit. From there we plan to visit Lonely and possibly Russell. At the end of the week, we will camp our last night on Pickeral before exiting at French Lake on Saturday, July 8. 8-)
Before our trip, we will be staying at the highly recommended Quetico School College near French Lake, and serving all of the northern entry points. They provide overnight accommodations and serve dinners and breakfasts for less than $100. All accounts say that they are the best bang for the buck. Try them and see. 8-) We will enjoy sharing a cup of Joe with any who find us. 8-) |

We'll be flying our QJ banner and a US flag which will make our camp easy to spot from a distance. 8-) Are we going to have total solitude on one of the busier travel routes? Let us know if you're going to be in the area. ;)

Well, if Deux Rivieres is reported as "manageable", there's a good chance my party of two will make it beyond Pine Portage Bay down to Sturgeon Lake. The game plan would be to do "day trips" into Antoine & Oliphaunt (& around the Pickerel River) as well as down towards the Narrows. Our time is short, unfortunately, so I'm trying to cram a lot of adventure into the few days my newbie partner can allot. He's a federal wildlife conservation program & policy guy from D.C. so I'm really looking forward to hearing his thoughts about what he sees.
Chances are the "Flamingo Flag" will be flying at one of those many north Sturgeon campsites opposite the portages into Ram or Oliphaunt. QJer's are always welcomed. It's hard to beat "pink" when it comes to locating your campsite on the distant shoreline just before dusk.... Later, Jimbo 8-) |

Assuming that we can spot you and the pink penguin doesn't blend into the surrounding pink petunias, we will be unmistakable. After all, the Canucks will be wise to assume there is some form of terror nexus in the woods with a pink penguin, a QJ banner, and an American flag all flying at the same camp. That combo should draw the spy drones in for a closer look. Heck, Barney may pay us a visit. ;) ;D

'Bout time for an update on this saga.
The current plan, subject to change as always, is that we welcome PineKnot to our party. He will be paddling his solo Wildfire with us. We are still planning to meet Jimbo and his nephew, now on Pickeral. We plan to move on to Upper Sturgeon and Antoine before moving down to Lower Sturgeon in the Scripture Is area and Lonely. If you want to Rendezvous, pm us for more details. We always look forward to meeting/seeing other QJERS. The coffee will be on. 8-) |

We'll meet you guys somewhere between Lookout Island and Pine Portage Bay. If you get an early start, we may be arriving there at approximately the same time as I will be starting from either Buckingham or Rawn. Keep your eyes open around campsites: 1HX, 524, 34G, 584, 1J1, 641, 1B8 and 1AP. We'll leave Wetasi Island alone... too much traffic and way too many ants!

Wetasi Is, such fond memories...and the scene of a barking spider 🕷 invasion about 20-25 years ago. Worth a salute as we pass it by. 8-)

Must have been what the ants were eating... or vice versa. It was infested, that's for sure! Jimbo 8-) |

Our latest revision to our 'stay flexible' trip plan has us heading into the North end of Sturgeon for the first couple of nights before heading down into the Scripture Is area. From the north end we will daytrip into nearby lakes, which is our plan for the trip. Pineknot will be in our party, so we will be a tandem and a solo.
If you see us, paddle over. The coffee pot is on. 8-) Fish on! |

It all sounds like a good backcountry rendez-vous. Enjoy.
